Beat using a walkthrough. There is no way to get through the dungeons without a guide, short of painstakingly making your own map. The unnecessarily large areas with copy pasted rooms with extremely little in the way of landmarks, and no in game map whatsoever, make navigating this game one of the worst gaming experiences in existence. I even got lost a few times despite the guide, and got a literal headache from trying to find my way. I grinded Frodo until he could one shot wolves. Pippin got killed in the caves by bats. I hate how there is no healing in town, enemies respawn, and the bats and wolves do an annoying charge attack that is difficult to counter. Block sucks. The AI can't handle the way bats and wolves attack. Sam got killed by orcs on what's his face's farm. Merry somehow managed to survive until the final boss, through no effort of my own. I think the barrow wights allowed him to get some easy xp. Game broke when I got Aragorn because I could not move him or Frodo. I had to use the god awful password system to fix that. I could never use Frodo again; he just stood there at zone entrances being useless. Continued on to Moria. Guide said I had to solve a puzzle; nope door was wide open. Went back to Rivendell because I did not show Gandalf a quest item like the guide said, but he was not there. Guess he did the puzzle for me? Skipped all the ultimate weapons because they make you weaker. Seriously how did they fail basic math this hard? Merry, Gandalf and Legolas died at the balrog. Legolas might as well not even be in the party because they did not feel the need to impliment any attack for him. Took 2 tries to win, and I had to move back and forth hitting him with sword and avoiding his attacks. Why the hell is the hp display and item use disabled for this fight? I had healing items which would have come in handy! So Frodo, Aragorn and Gimli mourn the deaths of everyone else. Not sure how Gimli managed to survive.
Final stats:
Aragorn: level 26 with elvish sword and chain mail
Frodo: level 12 with sting and mithril armor
Merry: level 12 with elvish dagger and chain mail
Gimli: level 10 with heavy axe and chain mail
Legolas: level 5
Gandalf: level 20
