Did 100% of content and got all trophies.
The 50 hour clear time might be too high. There's no record in the game, so I just estimated after I finished.

Did 100% of content and got all trophies.
The 50 hour clear time might be too high. There's no record in the game, so I just estimated after I finished.

This is a simple, turn-based RPG with a majority of the focus on battles. The presentation draws inspiration from D&D, but also has elements of old turn-based RPGs like Dragon Quest or Phantasy Star mixed with a bit of gacha-style mechanics. You fight stuff or talk to NPCs in one screen, travel to other places on a map, see another static screen, fight/farm materials/escort people, rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat...

It's a cute little game that revels in its simplicity and lightheartedness, often making fun of itself, the team, the player, games, and pop culture. One NPC you meet is named Nabe Gewell who lives on Steam Island. Your team comments that he'll help them today, but he'll someday have all their money.

Playing through everything and getting all the trophies was an adventure in tedium, though. Some trophies are ridiculous (beat 50 dungeons - there's three (and a half?) dungeons, so I just repeat the easiest one 47 times? Why?) or confusing (get a game over, make an obscure combination of character and class). Luckily, sharing resources and money between all saves goes a very long way.

It's nothing super special, but if you like feeling nostalgic for old school RPGs, don't mind grinding, and/or want to consume all of said old school RPGs out there, then I would recommend. If you're looking for something new, fresh, exciting, ground breaking, what have you, then it's an easy pass.

PS - I've started the sequel, and although the pacing is a bit slower, its script, variety, and enjoyment so far is a step above the first, so if you're at all interested, perhaps start with that one.

Picked this up in a twofer with the sequel. Fun so far, a little repetitive, but the humor and pace of it is good.

[Knights of Pen and Paper] – 22h

  • I liked the concept of the game and I found it quite comic, but very repetitive after a few hours. I had to drag myself to finish the game.

Cute and amusing, it grows old due to repetition at some point and becomes a grind.
