And yet, when an anime woman death god slits my throat in a neon, imaginary dia de los muertos labyrinth, there is not a bone in my body that isn't completely on board. This game, to my glee and relief, contains the essence of 'pychopop', a genre created to describe the Danganronpa games, which has been completely devoid of new additions until the release of Rain Code. This is the land of deus ex machina, and of deus ex deus, and machina ex deus, and so on and so forth. The land of grim, gruesome violence and horror, accompanied by peppy visuals and a base, obnoxious style of comedy.
The unpredictability of the mysteries of this game, and of the overarching mystery which ties the story together, hinges on the constant flip-flop between rational and nonsensical reasoning. The game throws everything at you with equal importance, whether it is a serious challenge to your deductive reasoning, or the narrative equivalent of a 'losersayswhat'. You might be able to outsmart the smarts, but if you try too hard, you won't be able to out-stupid the stupids. Some might, very fairly, suggest that this makes the game terrible. Those losers will never have a floor-boyfriend.
