I just finished The Saviors of Sapphire Wings, and had a surprisingly good time with it. The customization was a bit limited for a DRPG, but there was still enough to keep me engaged for the 30 hours the main story took. I'd put it on par with Mary Skelter story-wise, so surprisingly decent for the genre. There's a large focus on the bonds between the main character and their "squires" (other party members), with their relationship level being a direct and important game mechanic. Unlocking higher relationship levels gives you discussions with the character in question (in addition to the gameplay benefits), which do a nice job of fleshing everything out when taken with the main story content.
I'll come back for Stranger of Sword City Revisited at some point in the future. The games share most of the core mechanics, and I don't want to burn myself out.
