I don't think any of Remedy's recent games are PERFECT or anything but if I were a billionaire I'd be shoveling so much goddamn money directly into their coffers

I can't even quite name what itch both Control and Alan Wake II scratch for me, but they really, really do

Alan Wake 2 starts with me dying. I'm a bloated, rotting, near-corpse thing washed ashore the cauldron lake. Men with deer masks, shrouded in shadows surround me and rip my heart out. Did Alan wake write me into existence? Gave me life again, only to be killed all over again? Or did the dark presence send me out? To find the weapon that defeated it all those years ago.

I'm Saga Anderson now. Travelling to Bright Falls, along with my partner Alex Casey, following a string of murders. Alex shares his name with a fictional detective from Alan Wake's novels and his face with that of Max Payne. Saga meets up with deputies Thornton and Mulligan at the cauldron lake area.

Alan wake 2's camera is a lot tighter than the first game's. An over the shoulder perspective with a more "modern" control layout. Pressing the run button this time sends you into more of a jog rather than the full-on sprint that left you breathless after 5 seconds in the last game. The inventory system and the upgrade system are also new additions.

More in the next update.

The Cynthia Weaver boss fight is absolutely miserable. I didn't even spend that much time on it (took me two tries to take her out) but god was it irritating.

I get that this is a horror game and you're supposed to feel weak when you're in combat but god I've hated every single combat encounter so far

I've never played any of the Alan Wake games, but seeing this musical rendition in the game awards has me intrigued, it looks a bit whacky, creative, and different from what I was expecting, I mean I wasn't expecting Alan Wake to have a musical number at all but they have my interest now!

I guess I’ll have to play this to see if it really is deserving of the best storytelling. I think Remedy does a great job with the world building aspect of their storytelling, but I find their actual narrative skills lacking. Maybe this game will change my mind.

Finally. An actual good reason to watch Keighley's hype show.

According to the most recent episode of This Week In Video Games, Alan Wake II failed to crack the top 150 of game sales in its own release month. It was released later in the month, but this is a massively expensive AAA game.

It's almost like making your game EGS exclusive on PC and refusing to release physical copies for consoles where physical sales still comprise a huge portion of sales might, I don't know, completely tank your sales.

It's really sad to see a game that is, by all accounts, excellent completely sabotaged financially by braindead business decisions. If this game releases physically, I'll definitely pick up a copy. But until then, I'm happy to let this be a lesson in corporate hubris.

  • Easily the best game I've played all year

  • The rock opera musical level is one of the best moments for me in gaming - can't believe they had to fight to keep that sequence in
  • It similarly blew my mind when we got to watch Thomas Zane's short film in the theatre
  • Sam Lake worked so hard on this game - as creative director, writer, playing Alex Casey, playing himself, those dance moves, that short film - wow
  • Love Ahti the janitor
  • One downside was the abrupt ending - felt similar to the first game but hopefully DLC will expand upon it

It is a shame that this didn't receive a physical release, I'd really love to wrap a copy and put it under our tree at Christmas.

The craziest part of Alan Wake II now has its own music video. If you have any interest in playing the game, best not to watch this and just bask in the madness of it once it happens in the game. Otherwise, enjoy.
