In the evenings, I like to try and play like 15 or 20 minutes of games with the kids. I want to be playing the Dragon Quest VII remake on PS5. However, the other night I went down to the basement to get on the Switch 2 because I needed to do the complicated song and dance of linking my old Switch Lite with the Switch 2 so that I could eject a digital game card from the Switch 2 in order to play it on the Switch Lite. After I did all that, I clicked on the Gamecube app for some reason. The kids saw the Original Luigi's Mansion and told me we had to play it. Now I'm not allowed to play anything else until we find Mario. It's pretty good, but I really hate the reverse vacuum controls.

I was looking forward to playing this game but the controls make it unplayable for me. I was looking forward to playing this game but the controls make it unplayable for me. I pushed until the first boss but I can't bring myself to play it anymore, even though the gameplay was fun, engaging and original. I just can't stand the controls. Why is everything shown from the side? Why is axis switched in Game Boy Horror's camera? If everything must be shown from the site, why is there no cue where the Poltergeist 3000 is pointed at? This game urgently needs a remake that would bring it some modern controls because they ruin what could be a really funny game.

Returning to this game after sometime ("cough"wait, that was 3 years?!!!"cough") and honestly, I can backup many of the complaints alongside the game being Resident Evil designed for children. although, yes that's true, the game also has a lot of strong moments. I easily sank 4 hours into this game without noticing. and the puzzles are really good. it kinda helps teaching kids about problem solving, which I'm personally all in for it.

Finally getting to this one. Unlike most Nintendo games, the controls aren’t particularly obvious. I wonder how much that has to do with playing the 3DS version with the motion controls, but turning them off didn’t help much. Just triggering the baby boss fight was a bit of a struggle for me.

Beaten the 3DS version of the game after years of playing the GameCube version. I played on the main mansion with 100% completion and A ranking. I'm aware that there is an S rank on the Hidden Mansion on 3DS, but I will save that for another time. Not a bad port, but I much prefer the GameCube controller. This …

This port should NOT be $40, but I still recommend it if you are willing to wait for a sale or discount.

11/18/2001: Luigi’s Mansion

Luigi’s Mansion has aged pretty well. The game mechanics are fun enough to keep you entertained over its five hours of gameplay, and the idea of Luigi starring in his own game about ghost hunting is as fresh as ever. 4 / 5 stars. #GameCubeRewind
