Wow. Can't believe how long I played this, even with no tunes to accompany. And how rudimentary it is. But it's the strategy game that held my interest the longest so far, so it deserves the positive renown it has. And yes, you're looking at the Despot who was ranked number one by Herodotus, that's right. :-p My favorite part was the resaearch "skill tree" and the concept of building from nothing. I chose Zulus. It moved much faster than I expected, and there was less focus on population vs maintenance numbers than I expected (though that was a thing, it didn't overburden the game as much as its predecessors in this genre. well... I also had it on the easiest difficulty haha). Either way, I like how it played and though I only played for an hour and a half, I did keep saying I'd stop and then keep playing, plus I saved it for when I want to return to it some day. Regardless, it's a very solid foundation to a deserving series.
It probably would ahve wound up with a 3 star due to my broken rating system, so Imma leave this as a status update and give it the 4 stars it deserves :-p
