Wow. Can't believe how long I played this, even with no tunes to accompany. And how rudimentary it is. Wow. Can't believe how long I played this, even with no tunes to accompany. And how rudimentary it is. But it's the strategy game that held my interest the longest so far, so it deserves the positive renown it has. And yes, you're looking at the Despot who was ranked number one by Herodotus, that's right. :-p My favorite part was the resaearch "skill tree" and the concept of building from nothing. I chose Zulus. It moved much faster than I expected, and there was less focus on population vs maintenance numbers than I expected (though that was a thing, it didn't overburden the game as much as its predecessors in this genre. well... I also had it on the easiest difficulty haha). Either way, I like how it played and though I only played for an hour and a half, I did keep saying I'd stop and then keep playing, plus I saved it for when I want to return to it some day. Regardless, it's a very solid foundation to a deserving series.

It probably would ahve wound up with a 3 star due to my broken rating system, so Imma leave this as a status update and give it the 4 stars it deserves :-p

Welp, I think it's time I go back a little in time and give a more earnest try (or in some cases, like with this, a first try) to the foundations of 90s strategy games. Usually strategy games, even when I respect and like them, don't get much play out of me. I know I engaged quite a bit with those Dune games, but when I got to X-Com: UFO Defense in 1994, it made me think of how much I loved Starcraft and Risk as a kid, and wondered why I don't seem willing to devote the time needed for an in depth strategy game with this project. Maybe it's just because of how long the project made the backlog, or because I don't have the time I did as a kid, or because I only played the very very early examples, orrrr because I am not a fan of the numbers management and more so a storyline of building up and concrete, logical goals to achieve. Based on the description of Civilization, that's seeming like that's the case here: build from nothing. Might be more up my alley. I also added Master of Orion to play.
