Amber Throne is a traditional JRPG-styled game that focuses on turn-based battling and some light exploration. The game features a large cast of unique monsters that change stances depending on actions taken during combat, and a party with mostly mixed hybrid roles to deal with them. Learning monster behavior and how your skills affect them is essential to reaching victory.

Great Artwork with a Unique Story and Bland Gameplay

I have very mixed feelings about this game.

The gameplay didn't work for me. It tries to use a system of shifting stances with weaknesses to break through the stances. But these weaknesses don't have clear ways to identify or predict, so you are blind picking attacks. Also enemies regain the stance SO fast that sometimes this balance and check system feels pointless.

Progression I also think is off with characters not feeling particularly stronger with new abilities, minus slightly higher damage and more HP.

Because of this I found the choices and combat builds pretty mindless so combat really bored me.

I am also someone who usually really enjoyed turn based RPG combat. I like how it usually is deep, rewards planning, and identifying roles for party members. But this mostly doesn't have that.

The artwork and story is the real draw for this game.

The artwork is absolutely stunning and unique. I did regularly run into issues of struggling to figure out where I could and couldn't move on maps, or even what was interactable.

The story is interesting, drawing on themes of environmental issues, cycles of violence, and issues of isolation and ignoring surroundings. It is not …

The story is interesting, drawing on themes of environmental issues, cycles of violence, and issues of isolation and ignoring surroundings. It is not always told in clear terms, frequently story beats are left more nuanced with room for interpreting what exactly was happening in brief cut scenes or dialogue moments. However, some of this is also due to some issues in grammer and sentence structure.

The game is not long, I beat it in 13 hours.

Even with a shorter length, I am not positive if this game is worth playing. I think a better experience would be watching someone else play it, so you can do something else during the frankly boring battles.
