After having defeated the ultimate evil in his previous adventure, the great hero Adol stands on a sea shore, thinking about the fate of the once peaceful Utopian land of Ys, while the wind is blowing through his red hair. Suddenly, Adol notices a bottle, thrown onto the shore. It contains a letter, written in a foreign language, in which an unknown person asks Adol to come to his land and save it from a mysterious evil. Adol decides to accept the offer, and thus his adventure begins again... Ys IV: Mask of the Sun is an action RPG with a combat system like the earlier Ys games. An enemy should be rammed from the sides in order to hurt him. If performed incorrectly, the player will get hurt himself. It's also possible to use magic and position oneself strategically in battle so that the enemy won't be able to inflict any damage. Read less

I just started playing this an hour or so ago and have already had more fun than I did in my entire playthrough of Ys V. The bump combat was daunting at the start (which is why I played V first) but it was easy enough to get used to. Everything moves ten times faster than in V. Even though the first boss was a challenge for me, you're able to save and load from anywhere, so I just kept reloading until I learned how to both attack it and avoid its attacks. Looking forward to continuing playing!

Beat the game. I had trouble figuring out how to attack; doing it with contact damage was weird and the entire jousting style of battle was weird. Beat the game. I had trouble figuring out how to attack; doing it with contact damage was weird and the entire jousting style of battle was weird. I bought the 1st sword but skipped shield and armor to grind money for the 2nd tier. Got wrecked by the 1st boss and then bought the 2nd sword. Once I found the thunder set I skipped buying any gear for the rest of the game.

I found the combat to be decisive in that I would either kill enemies in seconds or die myself in seconds. Most bosses were very hard until I got to the sorceress Vami. I had to check a walkthrough to find out I was so under leveled that I literally could not damage her. So I had to grind some levels (went from 23 to 27). Same thing happened for the next boss, so more grinding until level 30. That boss was the most difficult in the game and I ended up using an elixir and mana medicine to use magic attacks with the best sword and got him to half hp. The final boss was actually quite easy and I knew from the walkthrough not to use the best gear. It is kind of hinted at just before the final battle but I wonder how many people would think to downgrade equipment.

Great game with awesome music. My only complaint is the hard level gating for those bosses.
