Set sometime in classical Japanese history, Ōkami combines several Japanese mythology and folklore to tell the story of how the land was saved from darkness by the Shinto sun goddess named Amaterasu, who took the form of a white wolf with celestial markings covering its fur. It features a distinct sumi-e-inspired cel-shaded visual style and the Celestial Brush, a gesture-system used to perform miracles.

Wow is Okami a long game! I really enjoyed my playthrough. The Zelda comparisons are quite apt as the progression feels very similar, complete with random bosses that feel like they may be the end boss but are actually the midpoint of the game. All told, I spent just over 50 hours playing and while I was close to doing everything in the game, I didn't quite get there. I really like the way you level Ammy up by quantifiable god points as opposed to traditional experience. It makes it so you don't feel like you should be grinding (unless you are doing it for currency).

Honestly, the one thing I found a bit lacking in this game is it was way too easy. I never died during my playthrough. In fact, I was never really close. I didn't even use healing items until the end boss. That could be because I spent a lot of time doing the side quests. I loved finding animals to feed, doing the hunts, and doing anything else that people asked so I could level up. It made it so playing the game was constantly fun. I even neglected to use the fast travel system just in case I stumbled on a side quest I hadn't done yet.

Okami is definitely worth playing for anyone who is a fan of Zelda-style action adventure games. I played the HD version on the PS3 and it was beautiful. That is definitely the version I would recommend to anyone!
