An achievement popped for having finished part 2 and I’m going to take a break from this. I have always found something to like in every Starbreeze/MachineGames game. The presentation setting and sound are all top notch. There are creative choices like being able to watch all of To Kill a Mockingbird which I see and tip my hat to. The game had me wanting to learn more about the origins of the darkness despite that ‘other place’ you go, being a bit of slough. The combat was repetitive and underwhelming - I never felt as powerful as the enemies treated me, until maybe when I unlocked the black hole move. I’ll likely return to it to power through the third part sometime down the line.

I have nearly finished this (hopefully). I like it. I don’t know why, but I do. Everything about it is kind of clumsy. The darkness weapons seem neat at first, but alternating between them and your guns is unnecessarily difficult. That combined with having to shoot out all the light sources (of which there are so so many) just to use the darkness lead to me mostly sticking with my human guns. There have been some weird ambitious touches to this game that I wasn’t expecting – the ability to watch the entirety of To Kill A Mockingbird while snuggling with Jenny on the couch is a lovely idea. You also have to traverse the neutral ground of a subway station repeatedly where you interact with people and use the pay phone to unlock collectables, an odd slice of Shenmue nestled in this FPS.
