Final Fantasy in Space

Star Ocean TDF is basically Final Fantasy in space and I was hooked the second they let me zoom around like a rocket. Loved the story, loved the characters, loved that little minigame way too much. It’s short, the side quests are meh, and some of the bosses were ridiculous, but I still had a blast and will definitely replay …

Hmm, at the beginning this game was really attracting me, both for the gameplay and also for the story, but after a while it became very boring....

Why? Well simply because of the oversized maps, the game forces you to take VERY LONG WAYS to get from point A to point B, just to see a cutscene.... And then you have to start all over again for another cutscene...

In short, the game is really full of cutscenes, I repeat cutscenes, because I saw more cutscenes than gameplay.

If I wanted to watch all these cutscenes, I would have watched a good anime or movie.

In the end the story didn't even interest me that much, I found it boring.

Too bad, the characters are well done, the skills, the moves, just as good.

But in the end I was also in a hurry to want to finish it right away and then discard it. Because it was too boring. Amen.

This game is a good JRPG but the design choices on battle systems really hurt this game - I get the feeling this game was trying to be like Kingdom Hearts or Ys with it but limiting moves to a resource system is just silly, and it makes it clear during boss fights it should have been scrapped. Not only that, the story drags on a bit too much and especially near the end its one of the worst I've ever seen. Instead of making the game artificially longer with a "will they won't they" kind of scenario with the antagonist of this game, the game should have been tightened up and time spend on ironing the many issues this game has. I cannot tell you how many times I've had the MC clip into the environment because of cracks or gaps in the floor - its atrocious. Not only that, bugs have crashed the game or caused enemy encounters to not disengage despite being across the map. I get the feeling this game was rushed given the state of Square's releases and Tri-ace did themselves no favors. Its a real shame too - the story and characters are interesting and the graphics are okish (I can see why people have issues but I'm here to play a RPG folks). I think the 7/10 reviews out there are on point. This game has good potential but better design decisions must be made on any future entries.
