Played this a bit on the flight to Australia. Crammed into a plane seat and tired from traveling probably is not the best experience, but I'm slowly starting to understand the core gameplay loop. There's a lot more planting that I thought would be.

Should I start another metroivaina after finishing Hollow Knight? Probably not, but I let's try it anyway.

I’m obsessed with connecting the living network and the satisfaction I gain from successfully constructing a chain of plant life across vast distances within the sarcophagus is astounding. Who knew gardening could give you such a rush?

Ultros Is a Psychedelic Voyage to the Outer Limits of Gaming

Singular and confident, Ultros is a startling piece of work that knows exactly what it wants to be, and hones in on that goal with laser beam focus. It depends on time-tested videogame actions and concepts not just for their comfort and retro appeal, but as a familiar foundation that can be gradually fucked with as part of the game’s greater themes. And although those themes and their presentation are intentionally confusing and obtuse, Ultros never devolves into chaos for the sake of it; there’s always a clear point of view and thought process driving the game’s design. Ultros brings mystery back to gaming in brilliant fashion, delivering us the first genuinely great game of 2024.

Garrett Martin at Paste captures a lot of my thoughts and feeling about the game, nailing why I think there’s a very good chance this is not only the first really great game of 2024, but will likely stay on my short list of favourites. This feels like it’s going to be a hard game to top.

Ultros is more than I expected, but I worry about sharing details about its structure and mechanics for refresh of spoiling what I think might be one of its most compelling elements. Needless to say, I’m finding it quite exceptional and as I unlock new abilities movement and combat are developing into deeply satisfying aspects of the game. But it’s the thematic core, and how the game’s overall design lends itself to that core that is truly what feels quite satisfying. It’s clear a lot of thought was put into how structure and narrative benefit from a deeply reciprocal relationship in the best of games.

I wonder how long Ultros is. I wonder if I have time to complete it before FFVII Rebirth drops. I'm debating picking it up while it's on slight discount and playing it before the end of the month, but maybe I'll need more time. And If I need more time to devote to Ultros, maybe my time is better served …

I'm debating picking it up while it's on slight discount and playing it before the end of the month, but maybe I'll need more time. And If I need more time to devote to Ultros, maybe my time is better served by just grinding out more end game content in Granblue Fantasy Relink and saving Ultros for post the FFVII Rebirth period. Yes, none of this is particularly interesting stuff, I know 🤣

The demo sold me on Ultros, although I was already very interested in the aesthetic. I definitly have to pick it up. There is quite a bit in the demo alone that helps it stand out in the sea of Metroidvanias.

The dodge and counter and the ability to spin and ricochet enemies off of each other are both quite satisfying and the upgrade system based around eating consumables that also double as restorative items was very intriguing. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Ultros has in store.
