A pair of uncanny-valley Swedish parents are transported into a Toy Story paradise/nightmare scenario, thanks to their equally-uncanny daughter's magical tears over her parents' impending divorce. There, a Mexican-stereotype sex ed book helps them resolve their marital issues, mostly by sending them on a remarkably plentiful amount of varied 3D platforming challenges, and by shouting the word "CO-LLA-BO-RA-SHUN!!" at least a dozen times.

Over the course of this game, you will fight a kung fu squirrel atop a toy airplane, hack into a space baboon's UFO, and drag a whimpering stuffed elephant to its death, among other countless inanities. The game keeps up a breakneck pace, with a near endless stream of light-hearted platforming, combat, puzzles, and minigames to keep you and your presumably S.O. entertained enough to endure the nonsensical story.

I don't know if it'll help any IRL parents resolve their marital issues via tag-team platforming, but I'd recommend it on its sheer gameplay/level variety alone. It gave my girlfriend and I some good laughs, and some were even intended by the game, if you can believe it.

I don't think I have ever been this angry about a game. It started off okay, with pretty fun coop action. The divorce story was cringy and super cheesy but I was willing to just ignore the story and play through the game for the platforming coop fun. Then came the part with the elephant... Yeah, no... If I am in the mood to play a dark gritty horror game, I won't have an issue with ripping someone to shreds. But this game is a happy, no stress, all is fun anti stress game with a story that is super cheesy and has no depth whatsoever. When I play a game like that, I will absolutely not torture a stuffy elephant to death who has done nothing but be nice to me and begs for their life. This is probably the most fucked up scene I have ever encountered in any game I have ever played and I stopped right there before anything happened to the elephant. This is so misplaced in this game, I can not wrap my head around how anybody can recommend this garbage. I was totally fine with the poison gas scene in SpecOps for example, because it fits the narrative of the game, this is just bullshit. I will never touch this game again, I would not recommend this to anyone and I never wanted my money back so badly. Games are there to entertain, to make me have a good time, this game did the opposite. 0/5 - The worst!

Студия Hazelight создавшая данную игру, известна такими тайтлами как “A Way Out” и “Brothers”, давно выполняет свои релизы в данном жанре. Arcade Game: Fire Truck (1978 Atari), Left 4 Dead, The Forest, No Man’s Sky, Overcooked, Portal 2.

It takes Two?

What I liked about it was it was like playing multiple games in one. You got an action RPG, a platformer, a rhythm game, etc., with various minigames spread throughout the map.

You also really have to work together with your partner -- mine wasn't one for platformer games, so it made for some hilarious moments (hopefully you both manage it before it gets annoying lol; it got so bad at one point we had to restart and swap characters for a while).

And oh did I love the winter wonderland and even the underwater one. Those were so pretty. The music room was also pretty neat. Our favorite parts of the game were probably looking for the non-story elements we could interact with.

It takes two is an ambitious game. It really wants to do a lot. There is no doubt that the art style is absolutely its highest point. There are so many interesting environments with different themes that are absolutely a joy to experience. However, all other game components of It Takes Two were rather poorly executed and made the game, despite its great presentation, a very mediocre experience. Let’s explore why.

The story of It Takes Two is something that most of people recognise as a low point of the game. Therefore I do not intend to spend too many words on this topic. To me the quality of the story wasn’t really that important as the game is primarily a co-op platformer - a genre in which the gameplay is an absolute king and the story is just a nice bonus.

Though I must mention that I do not remember a game where the story would so actively ruin my enjoyment of the game as It Takes Two did. The two characters that you control are just horrible. They are toxic and one dimensional. The game has many cutscenes where you basically just watch these two characters arguing in intense and less intense situations. One throwing really bad jokes and cringe punchlines, while the other bitterly reacts to everything. Virtually all the dialog is delivered in shouting so everything hits even worse. But what really ruins the experience is that characters’ shouting comments continue into the gameplay.

For me, a big reason why couch multiplayer is awesome is because you can share great moments instantly with someone next to you. You solve problems together and share the joy of beating a boss or figuring a difficult puzzle out. You discover new environments and feel mutual thrill in doing so. But it is hard to form your own experience and opinion when in-game characters just interpret everything you see, before you can even process it yourself. Characters in It Takes Two just wouldn’t shut up. They keep telling you how you should feel about stuff and that aspect alone ruined a big portion of the game. It truly took away most of the wonder that game has otherwise visually successfully created.

Luckily I discovered that there is a setting, that lets you mute all the in-game dialogue. I can’t describe you how big of a difference that made. We still played with the subtitles on, but I think it wouldn’t hurt to also turn these off as you will have much more interesting experience interpreting everything that is going on the screen.

Next let’s talk about the gameplay. It Takes Two is a 3D platformer. The character movement feels nice - it is fluid and responsive. Although I think that the move set is too powerful. Right from the beginning you get dash, wall jump and double jump. Although thats fine, the powerful movement set pretty much makes the platforming challenge obsolete. Timing and making precise jumps is almost never a challenge. You just fly through stages and ultimately fail to appreciate all the visual spectacle that the game throws at you.

The other aspect of the gameplay is cooperation mechanics. Each level introduces new tools that our characters use. One has ability A and the other ability B. Together you combine these abilities to get through the stage. But no matter the provided tools, the task is always a version of one character moving / placing platforms, so the other can then jump across. After that the other opens some kind of doors so the players meet and together move to another stage. This kind of gameplay is repeated thorough the game, but with different coat of paint. And by the end of the game it really felt rather stale.

Another problem is that the game keeps introducing new mechanics and abandoning old ones. As a result, you don’t really feel any kind of progression in terms of feeling more powerful and skilled compared to the beginning of the game. Maybe they should make double jump and dash as permanent upgrade that you acquire after beating a certain boss. And maybe they should let you keep the tools you acquire thoroughout the game. This way the puzzles and obstacles could be more open ended and you could use a combination of tools.

Some of the tools were definitely better than other. For example, I really liked the snow globe magnets, collaborative garden fights, Space level mechanics, and fight with boats. But all these cool concepts get replaced instead of being built upon. Some of them get abandoned so quickly that they just feel off and out of place for such game. For example the biggest offender was the lame castle wizard section.

Because of the hectic gameplay, intrusive story and lack of any meaningful progression, the game felt rather boring despite beautiful environments. In fact all the environments were changing so quickly that I always felt somewhat rushed to experience them. And because of that, I failed to connect with the game. I understand that there is the market for such games. In fact I think it’s a great game for casual gamers and kids. But it really lacks depth. It’s mostly just a visual spectacle.

I invite you to check my Best local coop games shelf if you want some more couch multiplayer fun. I am always looking for new and exciting titles.

It Takes Two is one of those 2021 games that everyone seemed to be talking about. I love story-rich games and co-op games so I couldn't wait to try it out.

Starting off, I was intrigued by the story line and imaginative environment, it felt like Alice in Wonderland told against the backdrop of real life challenges. It was definitely enough to keep me playing as I was curious how the plot would develop.

The two main characters, who had started off as mildly annoying quickly became the most obnoxious and off-putting protagonists I've ever had the displeasure of playing. At one point, we muted the dialogue audio which resulted in a way better experience for the rest of the game.

Another thing that became apparent throughout the game is the total lack of meaningful plot and character development. These two went from hating each other's guts to having a rom-com level kiss moment all because they supposedly bonded over their shared mission of tearing their kid's favorite toy apart (the toy is alive and begs us to stop, by the way) and bathing in her tears. As previously stated, I love story-rich games, but this story felt absolutely empty. The thing is, I am intrigued by the idea of COLLABORATION to make your partnership work and the other points the book makes but the execution of these cool ideas felt lacking in depth and originality. To take such a complex and broad subject such as the changing dynamics of a relationship and resolve it in a couple chapters of a talking book felt lazy and uninspired. These characters felt stereotypical and flat as if they were written for the story and not with the story. There were no attempts to make the main characters more likeable or vulnerable for the audience to better understand their challenges and conflicts, to better understand their story. It feels contradictory to have a story-rich game starring characters that are better off muted.

Characters and plot aside, the gameplay felt way too easy and guided. There were virtually no challenging co-op aspects, which, in my opinion, makes the co-op genre so fun. On another note, the ever-changing game mechanics felt rushed and unnecessary, the constant changes took away from the beautifully designed environments and quirky details. Even though some ideas felt very innovative and fun to play, they were on-screen for what felt like only a brief moment in the grand spectacle of it all.

I loved the visuals in this game, there were moments of delight and satisfying boss fights, but most of the time it was just ... meh. Overall, this game felt like binge watching a Netflix series; definitely eye-candy, but once you get into it, there's nothing more to it.

The story is good. Its about a mother and father who are about to divorce and the daughter doesn't quite know why they're always fighting. Her sadness and wishes sort of lead the parents into becoming dolls. The story, while cliche and cheesy at times, feels grounded, touching at times, hilarious at others and wholesome, seemingly in like a Disney-Pixar fashion.

The story is a beautiful story between lovers mending their relationship and life lessons that we can all learn from.

I don't review that much of this game because this game is truly special especially for me because the night I beat the game is the same night I propose to my girlfriend. Midnight on New Years Day.

Later played through with my partner on PS5. This game is stupid good! So, so fun. My partner loved every single session we had which made it so fun. There was such an awesome variety of gameplay which was constantly surprising and always polished. The writing and the characters as well were really endearing, and the overall story really cute. I don't think I've played anything with so much variety, so many disparate ideas that somehow all work. They executed so well on this game. It's extremely polished, and after rolling credits and seeing the crazy number of QA testers, I can see why. It was constantly fun to play, constantly surprising and delightful, and the whimsical feeling throughout the whole thing was a perfect match for the gameplay and the sheer creativity of the designs. If you're looking for a two player coop game, this is it. We recently played Sackboy together and that was great too, but I think this was even better.
