Last Halloween I played the first part of the Anthology, Man of Medan. It wasn't a memorable game, but a good playthrough in a lazy weekend.
This Halloween was released the second part, Little Hope. At first, I was skeptical about an Anthology proposal, especially because of the narrator that connects the different stories.
But It surprised me. Little Hope It's a simple game. But it's much more assertive than the first. The gameplay really works in favor of the story, and succeeds in creating tension with the aesthetics and choices. The characters are better thought and easier to emphatize. It knew how to end and where to end.
Yes — it is obvious, and has a lot of easy stereotypes. But It's a genre game, so it is okay to be tacky. Who doesn't love a small town horror?
I like traditions. And thematic holidays. So more than just a satisfying experience — I will be waiting for the next October 30th, and a brand new — not so good game.
Improvement over Man of Medan but still away to go. The characters were presented much better and the story was more compelling with twists and turns keeping things interesting, It did fall apart towards the end however which dampened my overall view. Some well executed jump scares along with fun loop segments kept things relatively enjoyable and worth the £30 spent.

Honestly, this was shaping up to be a 3/5 - it's a step up from Man of Medan, and I like these games fine while I'm playing them. Just like MoM I felt no particular investment in any of the characters and it failed at creating that emotional connection (if I think about it no Supermassive game has ever done so until The Quarry), but this one had a pretty interesting concept, set partly during the Salem witch trials which isn't something I've seen delved into in a video game before despite its potential for horror. I was also pretty intrigued by the whole 'identical counterparts' and the intersection of Salem and modern-day plots going on.
And then the ending just... shits the bed so utterly. Like, so utterly that it retroactively brought my enjoyment of the game crashing to the ground and tainted every second that had come before it.
Why are we still doing this 'twist' in 2023? Why? It's tired, it's boring, it's uncreative, it's a cop-out, it's been done over and over and over. It's Cliche Twist #1. I genuinely didn't know anyone still did it unironically outside of edgy theories people think up about kids' …

This was worse than Man of Medan. A lot of bad dialogue exchanged between characters who have unexplained, wild mood swings, most of the playtime is just walking around on an empty street or forest path, and the story doesn't get interesting until close to the end. There's a least some fun QTE encounters.
Preferred this to Man of Medan, even though I think MoM has better characters.

I played this game on Halloween week, online with a friend. The game is great and perfect for online coop. I am really glad that we gave this a try, since we had so much fun with it.
The story and characters are memorable, and it is easy to get to know them. This makes it hard when you have have to decide on important events that can change the course of the story. But that is the point of these types of games. Get you invested into a roster of characters, thus making you think hard about the decision you make. The game is very immersive, and the monster designs are grotesque and so well done. One of them specifically was a bit too much for me haha!
Now, the game did have a weird pacing in terms of moving from different scenes. I understand that it has to adjust to the decisions you make, but sometimes it felt a bit choppy going from point A to point B. Nevertheless I give it a good score in terms of "combat" against the monsters. It was very tense and scary.

If you like these types of games and have a friend to play with, definitely give it a try. It is not a long game, and you will have fun, for sure.
Little Hope was defintely way better than Man of Medan for me. The story was much more interesting, and had a lot more depth I felt that had me trying to piece it all together. The mechanics were alright, although seemed a little repetitive to keep "button mashing" to prevent a character from dying every single time. But overall I enjoyed this game, although it still wasn't as scary as it was creepy.
I consider this to be completed because it got stuck on an infinite loading screen at the point where the mystery was fully solved and the true culprit was caught. Embarrassing that a game can release in the state this one is in. I won't be trying any more Supermassive games, Until Dawn was clearly a happy accident.
4.2. This one was better than man of medan. the story was way more engaging.
My wife wants to play through the series, so we started with this one having already done Until Dawn a few years back. It's just like that game, with a more interesting story, but less spooky and overall the gameplay feels a little less involved. Decisions to make felt really unclear, with the clues they give being pretty unhelpful a lot of the time. That said, it offers some fun. Hoping the others in the series get back to Until Dawn's level of fun!
Hi! So, I just found out i have Stage 4 colon cancer and my chances of living another 5 years are slim (but not impossible) So my Stepson and I (I'm 29 and he's 17) have a new goal of beating as much Co-op games as possible. Ill be logging our adventures here if that's ok. Our first game was Little Hope! we had a blast with this. These games our top tier co-op games (i still can't get over the weird face animations) and I'm glad I'm just now getting into them so there's a nice catalog for us. Next up is Gears of war 2 :) Oh and im very conflicted about what actually went down at little hope. I cant tell if its a good twist or a lazy twist lol
story: 3.5/5 gameplay 2/5 dialogue 3/5 graphics 3/5 atmospheric/immersive: 3/5 surpassed expectations: yes
Excellent entry in the Dark pictures series, basically just interactive movies but amazingly acted, very creepy and good story
Putting this game in the Played category for now, even though we couldn't finish it. The most recent update seems to have broken the game, taking out certain features (can live with that) and introducing consistent crashes which sometimes corrupt your data. After reaching a crash we could not navigate around (other crashes we would replay the chapter and make a different choice and could get past it), we decided it's not worth continuing until it's patched. Bummer, too. This one was pretty cool!
This has some of the worst character writing I’ve encountered in a game. These characters oscillate wildly between seemingly sympathetic to one another all the way to what seems like disdain within the same breath. And none of these people’s motivations make any sense. Nothing about where they were going of their “field trip”, their relationships to each other nor any of their responses to what is happening around them makes a lick of sense. They also collectively seem incredibly uninformed about the word in general, i.e. they are a bunch of dummies.
After three corrupted saves on PS4, it took about 8 hours to actually finish a single playthrough. The art and cinematics are nice, but that's about it. The entire draw of Supermassive's games are based on a lie that the game overeagerly sells you - that your choices can meaningfully affect the outcome of the game. In Dark Pictures Anthology, they make the grift even more maddening with the pompous Curator character who occasionally interrupts to condescendingly suggest that every choice you are making is of dire importance and maybe you've already made the wrong ones. The truth is actually pretty simple, there are only two endings with any meaningful difference, and throughout the game you are only given a handful of choices that affect the outcome in any way. This has always been the case with Until Dawn, and with Man of Medan, but the disconnection between what the game tells you about how it works vs how it actually works has never been as blatantly apparent as it is here.
I only paid $20 for this and I would say I got my money's worth. But if your going to pay full price you might want to be sure you have someone to play with. Because Solo isn't worth that much money. At least to me anyway.
