Excited to dive back into this now that it's getting an official translation! I was so burnt out after trudging through Investigations 1 that I don't think I really gave 2 a fair shot.

After replaying both games, Investigations 2 has overtaken Trials and Tribulations as my favorite in the Ace Attorney series. It's a shame that it never got an official release outside of Japan.

Random thoughts

  • Music is still awesome
  • Unlike the standard AA games, the Investigations games typically have a continuous narrative rather than disjointed cases. This makes it easier to stay engaged with the story imo.
  • My fav story in the series so far. It's deeply personal to Edgeworth and you get both internal and external conflict. You get moments where Edgeworth and his companion bond, you see him solidify his resolve, he gets a great teacher, and you get to see how he would be with a potential protege. This is also the game where Franziska's growth is firmly solidified through how she empathizes with Sebastian's plight.
  • The stakes feel ridiculously high in this game. In the previous AA games, it often felt like the odds were against you. I think this game takes it up another level because it feels like Edgeworth is going against a corrupt legal system rather than just corrupt individuals. I will say that I personally thought that the turning points in the cases don't feel as satisfying as in the original trilogy. The original trilogy felt like you were an underdog and you flipped the entire case on its head, where as the Investigations games didn't really have the feel of being an underdog overcoming adversity.
  • Similar gameplay to the first Investigations, but it solves the issues I had with that game. My main problem with the first game was that Edgeworth was not deeply connected to the main conflict and there was a lack of a strong rival/antagonist.

After this, I'm expecting the series to go downhill. I'm skipping the Layton x Ace Attorney crossover just because I don't own it, so the next game I'll play is Dual Destinies, which I remember being bland when I first played it.

Leagues better than the first game, definitely a most play for anyone that likes the AA games, visual novels, puzzle games, or likes mind-blowing twists!

woah! i can definitely understand why this is considered one of the best games in the series, which begs the question, why was it never localised? what the hell, capcom? anyways, the fan translation was top-notch. felt very official.
