The first-ever Tekken World Tournament concluded earlier today, and the South Korean champion won with Kuma, a joke character that is never near the top of tier lists.
I love that.

This game is absolutely ridiculous. I played Tekken 7's story mode, and I enjoyed it... But it wasn't anything that really blew me away.
This one? I absolutely love the cinematics, and while I'm absolutely ready for the Mishima storyline to just be over with already, it's at least a damn fun time.

There's suddenly now a 3rd person brawler section, I'm kinda just here like... What else you got for me? I cannot understand how Tekken has managed to stay undeniably "cool" since the 3rd game in 1999, but man. I'm here for it. I skipped 4 and 5, but I dumped dozens of hours into Tag and 6.
... I'm also beginning to understand that my "type" might just be Lili. God she's so cool. 😍

I'm not really engaged deeply enough with fighting games to properly review this, but I have been having enough fun with it to say it's my favorite in at least the last 5 years. I couldn't get into story mode at all—honestly in retrospect I'm not sure I truly like any fighting game story mode regardless of how high its production value is—but bailing from that and jumping into ranked matches immediately brought the fun forward. I am probably too lazy to try to get actually good at this, but I enjoy it enough to at least consider it.

Finished the “The Dark Awakens” story mode earlier. Damn that was a hell of a fun ride. Good story with some great character moments, amazing fights (especially in the last two chapters) & a surprising amount of variety.

Won’t rate the game or write a review yet though as there is so much more to Tekken 8 than just the main story mode & I’ve hardly scratched the surface of all that.

Well I pay 10 bucks a year to this site because I think it's a cool site, may as well use it.

Recently played: Final Fantasy 1 and 2, Pixel Remasters. Fantastic way to play these oldies. I had no idea the signature melodrama of the franchise started in 2, I thought it would be at least 4 or 5 before it started.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is what got me started on this FF grind. That's a fantastic game, the materia system is Jeff's Kiss.
Been reading some fun Choice of/Hosted games. Don't Wake Me Up by Baudelaire Welche, is a recent good one, Blood Moon by Barbera Truelove is pretty cool, and Jolly Good: Cakes and Ale by Kreg Segall is a personal favorite.
Games or other stuff on the horizon for me: Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster obviously. Ed coming to Street Fighter 6. I want to read more One Piece because a friend swears up and down it's good, but it makes me physically ill to see 4 digits in chapters so I put it off and doom scroll Twitter instead.

As I kinda got into Street Fighter VI, I decided that it's also good to look at what Tekken is about. So I got Tekken 8.

I've played Tekken 3 as a kid and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on Wii U but I never really actually tried to learn or understand the game. Now that I do try, holy shit is this more brutal to get into than Street Fighter. There's tons of cool learning options and modes but still, it's hard to get a feeling that you know what you are doing or whatever you are doing is beneficial. Sometimes I like how I manage to pull off stuff or read the opponent. Sometimes I feel like I'm just spectator for my own beatdown.
I'm also not feeling Tekken 8 characters as much as I do Street Fighter VI ones. At least I've found Paul, who is a proper goofball. And there's actually tons of characters, costumes and customisation options right at launch.
We'll see how this goes. I feel like SF6 is more to my liking but that might just be me being a lazy learner. The game is good though and I've had fun. It looks and sounds amazing.
Oh yeah, and I happened to take part in a local Tekken 8 launch tournament without having much skills in the game at all. Of course, I did badly, but it was kinda interesting experience.

So I hate tekken story modes from 6 and 7, because I hate their full focus on kazuya and jin, mishima and kazama. I hate Lars, Kazuya, the devil gene and all that's intertwined with them.
I love Bryan, Kuma, Steve, Paul, Law, etc etc, everyone else.
Can someone who played tekken 8 story tell me if it's different this …

Can someone who played tekken 8 story tell me if it's different this time and they don't just focus on the same 4 edgelords again? From the demo it feels like they just did that.

The new character in Tekken 8 is a coffee living latina who works in a "finca cafetera"... And it's not colombian. It's peruvian.
I feel personally attacked.
