Wolfenstein: The New Order is an action-adventure shooter game played from a first-person perspective. It is the semi-sequel to 2009's Wolfenstein, however utilizes very little from the game and drops any direct references to veil or supernatural. To progress through the story, the player battle enemies throughout levels. The game utilizes a health system in which players' health is divided into separate sections that regenerate; if an entire section is lost, the player must use a health pack to replenish the missing health. In combat, a cover system can be used as assistance against enemies. The player have the ability to lean around, over, and under cover, which can be used as a tactical advantage during shootouts and stealth levels. The game gives the player a wide variety of weapon options—they can be found on the ground, retrieved from dead enemies, or removed from their stationary position and carried around. Read less

Pretty alright

There was nothing special in this one for me. I liked the setting and main story enough, found it to be interesting, and killing Nazis is always a great time. However, I didn't really like the characters and found the combat to be repetitive, especially with the lack of enemy variety. Overall, it is a well-made FPS, but it doesn't really do anything different or unique to stand out from its already abundant genre, will check out the sequels and see how those feel.

Decent at best

All the best stuff is in the intro levels. It's a serviceable shooter but really nothing more. It could have been much more interesting but it really dropped the ball and was bog standard and mechanically shallow.

Pros: The setting is very well done, the world building is impressive. The weapons are fun to use. While the stealth could be improved, it was enjoyable.

Cons: The sprint slide is very awkward to do on the keyboard. I use my pinky for both L-Shift and L-Ctrl, how am I supposed to press both at once. Many difficulty spikes later in the game starting around Chapter 12 (I lowered the difficulty in Ch. 15 but should have done so sooner). Shotgun heavy enemies tear you to shreds and there are several locations in Ch. 14 and 15 where it is hard to kill them before they get too close, leading me to attempt the same part of the level over and over again. Not fun. The final boss also tears through your health at a ridiculous rate. Oh did I mention it is way too hard to see enemies through flames? I didn't think the story or characters were anything special, but at least they didn't get in the way of the gameplay.

Do not replay.

Notwithstanding the over-the-top action and ludicrous setting, the extremely well-made characters, solid voice-acting, and thought-provoking dialogue make 'Wolfenstein: The New Order' something more than a generic shoot-em-up. Notwithstanding the over-the-top action and ludicrous setting, the extremely well-made characters, solid voice-acting, and thought-provoking dialogue make 'Wolfenstein: The New Order' something more than a generic shoot-em-up. Yes, the game contains the best gunplay in recent years; but it is truly memorable due to conversations such as this:

-B Jesus Christ! Tekla, aren't you asleep? -T I try not to sleep. No telling if I will ever wake up. -T Let me ask you something. -T Where do you go when you lose consciousness? -B What? -T You have a brain, a brain is a biological computational device running on electrochemical process. -T Your consciousness is an emergent property of said process. -T In other words: you are an electrochemical process -T Fundamentally you have experience of continuous existence. -T You are you, at this point in time. You have sensation of riding along this continuum of being you, into the future. -T On occasion brain can be subjected to trauma, temporarily discontinuing electrochemical process. -T Such as a boxer being knocked out. -T As this occurs the brain is no longer running. It's electrochemical generating process. -T Hence consciousness is lost. -T You loose consciousness. Pay attention now. -T At this point in time, your consciousness, all that is you... -T your continuum of being you has ceased to exist in the physical world, -T Now, moments later, the electrochemical process may start up again... -T ... allowing consciousness to emerge out of the information stored in the brain. -T But I wonder. Where are you in the meantime? -T Must we not assume that at the point when consciousness is lost, the person dies? -T If a new consciousness appears or not in the same brain is entirely inconsequential to the dead consciousness. -T The new consciousness is simply a new person. -T Because it emerges from the same brain, it has access to all the memories and cognitive structures... -T ... as the dead consciousness, so it thinks it is the same person -T But in actuality, it is just an impostor. -T Inheriting the body and brain from the previous, now dead, inhabitant. -T Yes? -B What about the soul? -T Soul... -T There is no such thing as a soul. -T We are machines of biology. -T Nothing more, nothing less. -T The soul is simply a pointless concept dreamt up by priests and fairy tale men.

I think this is a completely solid game, and being able to dual wield everything is fun, but it doesn't do anything beyond the norm to separate it from the pack. Where some critics have said that the voice acting and story is good, I find it sometimes hokey and cheesy. Sometimes they say or do things that are wonky. I buy into the whole premise of the game so that's not what I'm criticizing.

But the guns do feel good to shoot, and there's plenty of action. The graphics are pretty, and the levels are designed well. The somewhat non-linear way that you can approach situations because of the level design (also via stealth or balls to the wall action) leaves the action feeling fresh.

If you want an FPS fix, you can't go wrong with this, but it didn't impress me in any way.
