Stacking is a third person adventure puzzle game made by Double Fine, the studio behind the Psychonauts series, Full Throttle, Brutal Legend, and other fantastic games. In Stacking, you play as the smallest member of a working family where all characters are nesting dolls, all fitting inside of another. Being the runt of the family, you are told you can't do as much as the other bigger members, but when a dastardly Barron starts abducting children and members of your family for child labor it's up to you to save the day! Each level has a series of objectives that can be completed in a variety of ways. You can talk to other nesting dolls in the level to get bits of information that may lead to hints, or provide humor that Double Fine does so well. To complete these objectives, you have to sneak behind other nesting dolls that have specific abilities. Each objective usually has up to 5 different methods to solve, each varying quite a bit and providing their own sense of humor. You can replay all the levels to strive for the additional methods of completion, as well as finding all the characters in a level, and completing the hijinks. These hijinks typically are just small objectives based around acting as one character and inconveniencing or wreaking havoc on other characters. It's a fun distraction to pad out game play. It's a relatively short game, even if going for the 100% completion, but well worth your time. It feels like the most recent iteration of the Hitman games, but combined with a Monty Python skit.

The game might be great for casual gamers and those who are new to the genre, but those who expected Schaefer's old lunacy and absurdities, will probably be disappointed. I feel the humor falls a little flat, and the adventures of a little matryoshka doll named Charlie hasn't done much for me.

This fun little adventure puzzle game is a great way to relax if you need something low stress. While a few of the late game puzzles have a bit of time pressure, most of the game can be played at your leisure, and the controls are simple and easy to pick up.

The core mechanic is based around the theme of matryoshka dolls - you are the tiniest of dolls, and you can fit inside progressively larger dolls, with progressively sillier abilities.

The humor is a bit juvenile (lot of toilet humor, for example) but it's definitely cute and warm-hearted, and I got more than a few chuckles out of it. I did end up having to look up a few solutions, but only for optional completionist items, and there is an in-game hint system, as well as fairly robust environmental context clues.

My only other complaint about the game is that it's a bit dark, literally - I had to bump up the brightness and lighting a fair amount to discern some of the visuals.

I ended up completing the game 100% in about six sessions. Recommended for players of all ages and skill levels.

Cute puzzler

Unique puzzle mechanics and a fun world make this a memorable adventure. Play if you like the lego games.

Pretty perfect little package of a game, sweet graphics and puzzles that ride the edge of being doable and also incomprehensible at the same time.

If it were any longer (story's done in maybe 3-4 hours?) the gimmick might appear played out, but at this length it's good.

After watching a preview of Headlander (which looks awesome), I realized I'd never actually completed Lee Petty's previous Double Fine game. After watching a preview of Headlander (which looks awesome), I realized I'd never actually completed Lee Petty's previous Double Fine game. This is especially shameful given that it isn't very long, and I'm a huge fan of the studio. I can't say for sure why there was such a large gap between playthroughs... I'll blame it on the depth of my regret-filled Steam backlog.

This game is really a delight. The mechanic of stacking matryoshka dolls is a brilliant means of streamlining the typically clunky inventory and/or character-switching mechanics of traditional adventure games. The presentation is original and charming, and the worlds are fun to plunk around in. I really appreciated that puzzles had multiple solutions... a few times I found myself getting stuck because I was trying to think too much about the game developer's intentions, a habit learned from other adventure games that isn't really as necessary here.

I had a handful of annoyances during my playthrough. Most of the solutions revolve around finding specific dolls, but the consistent nesting doll shape makes this tough to do visually (I adjusted the brightness way up in an effort to help). While the title cards are initially a charming throwback to silent film, they get a bit tiring to read compared to traditional subtitles... I found myself enjoying cut scenes less than the average Double Fine game as a result.

These are really just very minor nitpicks, though. I'm excited to replay to find more solutions, hijinks and dolls. If you're in the mood for a fun, casual adventure game with a hint of (optional) collectathon, look no further.

Unique, inventive, addictive, and just overall a damn good time. Really glad I picked this up. Double Fine never disappoints!
