Peak fr... This game is pretty close to a "soulslike," very different from hollow knight which really isn't one at all. The combat system is pretty great, incredibly parry focused. In the beginning I was a little sad that there was no hard mode since I expected it to be easy, but it got harder as it went on. The true ending final boss may just be the hardest boss I've seen in a game, crazy difficulty spike. It's not a flawless game, I think most of the metroidvania elements were pretty unremarkable compared to others in the genre. It's still quite good though

I don't think this one is for me. The parry-focused combat did not sound appealing... and is not, in practice, much fun for me. I don't think this one is for me. The parry-focused combat did not sound appealing... and is not, in practice, much fun for me. Taking on one enemy at a time is fine, but more than that and I feel punished by both missing parries and pulling them off. There's no brief moment of invulnerability while succeeding at parry, or using the special ability you can use to counterattack. So I'd feel good about handling one enemy and then another would just be stabbing me while I was making my counter. The checkpoints feel so far apart and dropping your currency on death? Please, metroidvania developers, stop.
There is a story mode where you can adjust difficulty... but I don't play metroidvanias for story. There was a cool little twist at the beginning, but there's just way too much dialogue that interrupts me anytime I feel like I'm getting into any exploration flow.
It is real beautiful though.

This one is gonna take me a while to crack.
I'm starting reaaal slow because the controls do not currently feel native to my hands.

5 hours of my save are gone. Steam cloud's saves are blank for me...

Rounding the corner toward the final boss. It’s surprising what a couple weeks off will do for your ability to overcome a challenging fight.
I might actually see the end of Nine Sols this weekend. That is unless I need another two week hiatus after potentially getting my ass handed to me by the final boss during my initial visit.

Oof, having a tough time with the final phase of what I think is the second last boss of the game. They throw so much at me at one time that parring everything is tough. I know I'll get it, I get closer and closer to a win each time I put it down for a bit and pick it …

I know I'll get it, I get closer and closer to a win each time I put it down for a bit and pick it back up, but damn if it isn't kicking my butt in the final third of the second phase.

Then I take a break and play a bunch of low stress, low stakes games (so far a ton of Next Feat demos, The Invincible, Forza Horizon 4, Still Wakes the Deep and the intro to Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart) for a bit before returning to beat the boss. It’s something I don’t think I’ve ever done before but is, for some reason, really working out well for this game. After beating the boss I immediately explore the next area of the game, reach the next boss, fight, take another break. So it’s taking me several weeks, when in reality I’ve only put about 18 hours into the game.

Seldom do I ever play two games concurrently, but this game really demands that I take breaks between bosses, so I’ve been happily plugging away at the current Adrift excursion in NMS. It’s a nice balance of brutal Sekiro-like and (mostly) chill star system hopping.

@killerstar, I think I found another Metroidvania for you 🤣
This one has fast travel, so you can travel to your central hub for things like upgrades and then return to your last "bench" to continue your progress. It also consistently locates a "bench" adjacent to every boss (so far), so no long journeys just to get back to …

It's pretty conventional beyond that, except that it leans heavily on parry mechanics so people are affectionately calling it a Sekiro-like. I also think it's quite pretty, and I enjoyed Red Candle's previous two games Detention and Devotion. Like those two games, it's clear that Nine Sols employs elements that I think likely resonate with Taiwanese audiences, and I'm curious regarding where this game will travel thematically given the topics of their last two games.

Woof, my parry reflexes are out of shape, lol. The first real boss is kicking my ass because my timing is just a little off. I got close to defeating him last night after a bit of practice but it was getting late so I needed to put it down. I've defeated a couple smaller bosses (full big health bar and official "Boss Name" type bosses) roaming the map, but this guy has multiple phases. I have the first phase down without taking a scratch, and now I just need to improve my timing and reflexes for the second phase. As I said, I came close, so I'll take another whack at it tonight.
