Nine Sols (Xbox SS)

Now starting Eigong and fuck, it's hard. I don't like that you don't seem to be able to parry her talisman attack even with the unbounded counter. A bit inconsistent. The timing of the attacks also feel weird. There's something different in her animation or her sprites that is tripping me up.

Game design idea: if you finish a boss phase without taking damage, the boss drops a unique item. After collecting some number of those items, you can put them on a pedestal at the entrance of the arena to skip that phase entirely.

Now we're talking.

Jiequan was pretty fun. He's got a bunch of different attacks necessitating a variety of counters.

And now I'm with Lady Ethereal, which is awesome. I love the dance and how it rewards perfect parries. Each attack has it's own rhythm but they all work. I also love the setting and the character. It's a strong departure …

After like 8 hours, I beat the final boss! What an incredible, beautiful game. 8 hours fighting one single boss, and I had FUN the whole time. After like 8 hours, I beat the final boss! What an incredible, beautiful game. 8 hours fighting one single boss, and I had FUN the whole time. It never got frustrating, and I've never been that kind of player. Beating Melania and the final boss of Elden Ring dlc were mostly chores to me, but this was actually a blast. I think I legitimately like the combat better than Sekiro... which I think is my favorite game from Fromsoft, my favorite studio. That doesn't mean I like this game more than Sekiro overall, though... I actually might? I need to think on that. This would definitely have been my Gane of the Year if I'd finished it on time. I can't wait to see where Red Candle continues to go from here.

Yey! Fast travel 🎉

Although I can't understand why can't I travel between nodes. Instead I need to travel to the central node and then to another node from there. Which is the same in practice and gameplay terms, but with one more loading screen.

This character was tailor-made for the furries with a mind control kink that played this game. They're both having a field day.

But I rated Nine Sols at number 7 of my Game of the Year ranking just like a week ago. Already, without seeing the full ending, I could easily bump it up to at least number 3. Also looking forward to the boss rush mode after I beat it, and that's something I usually don't care about.

@BMO, how did you beat this boss?

enter image description here

I had to use a controller with back buttons and map the X to the left one. Otherwise, how can you charge the heavy attack while also jumping, blocking or dashing?

And sometimes the game is fucking awesome. Killing the boss with just a sliver of health, parrying every attack.

So satisfying.

This game is brutal. Every small mistake is a death sentence thanks to high damage, knockback and no iframes after damage. So if there's more than one or two enemies, you're in trouble. And if there are falling platofrms and environmental damage, then it's time to eat shit.

But I still like the overall feel of the combat. The parry …

The parry window feels rather generous, and the dance of parry to load on energy and then use the that energy feels good.

What I really don't like is the need to kill the enemy that killed you to get your shmeos back. It's a very annoying and mean-spirited ramp up of the usual reinforcement loop of failure. If you die, it's likely that a new tough enemy killed you, or it was in a dangerous area with many enemies. So it's very likely that you will die again before killing the enemy. At least other systems have some leeway in that you can run there and secure your stuff before trying to deal with the enemies; not here. This system also ensures that the best strategy if you're very low on health is to just kill yourself vie environmental damage to ensure an easier corpse run.

Lol, of course I get the double jump RIGHT after the boss it would have been most helpful for. Kinda wish all the modern metroidvanias would stop holding back double jump til late game.

The Lady Ethereal boss was absolutely insane. I think it took me an hour and a half of trying, usually in 1 to 2 minute intervals. Really amazing fight though, a lot of fun despite it's difficulty. And the visuals and music were great, really reminded me of Madoka Magica.

First game I beat in the new Yi-r that is 2025. I didn't know there was a true ending for this. I was wondering where the third phase was and I felt robbed.
