Just not worth it

Playtime: 3h17m

Intro

This is a fighting game with a ton of nonsense stacked on top.

The Good

  • Fights look really cool.
  • It's free.
  • 10% less child porn than Genshin Impact

The Bad

  • I unlocked 4 characters and half of them made me uncomfortable.
  • Time isn't free.
  • Boring story.
  • Uninteresting characters.
  • Combat is actually pretty basic.

The Ugly

The Ugly

  • Logging in takes over a minute and you have to click twice with ~10 seconds in between.
  • Exiting the game without using Alt+F4 takes 4 clicks and waiting for a slow menu to load. Lol.
  • Super predatory monetisation.
  • Most of the twenty different menu's consist of icons.
  • There are at least three different daily reward structures plus other F2P nonsense.
  • You have to walk around a small map, sit through menus and dialogue, move around on a 2D map and do the hokey-pokey before you're actually allowed to fight like two whole fights and the entire sequence repeats.
  • Seriously, between all the rewards, walking, talking, et cetera the actual fighting gameplay is like 25% of the game.

The Japanese

  • One of the characters looks like a kid and makes porn sounds.

Conclusion

Cool combat visuals, awful everything else.

Officially: Hollow Zero is repetitive and boring and being made to run the same mission over and over with negligible increases to difficulty is not enough to keep it feeling fresh nor compelling. Props to the people with the stomach to run the same thing ad infinitum, I guess.

After watching version 1.1 special program, I've decided not to spend any Polychromes on the actual banners and save them to try to get Qingyi and Jane Doe. They seem fun af.

I even considered starting pre-farming her upgrade materials, but I better don't. It would be frustrating if I do that and end not getting them.

Logged in this morning and then pretty much logged out without completing anything. Not a good sign.

If the story hiatus boredom doesn't kill me, the events tied to the Godfinger arcade probably will.

Getting tired of the fact that the only content left to do is highly repetitive and/or is the same content with difficulty modifiers for greater rewards. At this point the only point to the game is to get loot to raise character levels at a painfully slow rate, and that is the antithesis of interesting. I don't know how people …

At this point the only point to the game is to get loot to raise character levels at a painfully slow rate, and that is the antithesis of interesting. I don't know how people play this F2P GaaS games for months on end. I feel like I'm a breath away from forgetting to log in one day, and when that happens I know it's over.

This game desperately needs additional chapters. How do they hang on to players when there is nothing to do? Is this how al miHoYo games are designed?

One of the update notes for version 1.1:

A button for "Manual Chain Attack" mode will be added to the squad lineup interface before entering combat. In this mode, after Stunning an enemy, your actions will not trigger other Agents' Chain Attacks. A button for "Manual Chain Attack" mode will be added to the squad lineup interface before entering combat. In this mode, after Stunning an enemy, your actions will not trigger other Agents' Chain Attacks. Additionally, a "Cancel Chain Attack Combo" function will be added to combat, allowing you to choose whether to use the "Manual Chain Attack" mode according to your preferences.

This seems antithetical to the current flow of combat and to what I think makes the combat in this game interesting. It’s feels like the people complaining just want more conventional combat and I hope miHoYo doesn’t listen to the players when making every decision about mechanics.

Pulled a Rina dupe on my eleventh roll and Zhu Yuan on my 21st roll. Guess I can bank the rest of my polychromes for the next banner.

I tried to get Ellen, but I've failed. I'm 25 pulls from being guaranteed to get her, but I don't have enough time to farm more currency and I am not pulling out my wallet for an ICE character. At least it'll be easy to get whoever I pull for next.

@Sir_Laguna, since you have more experience with miHoYo products, and since you’ve talked about Qingyi and Seth on GamerFocus, do you have any guesses about whether or not they will be limited banners or if they will be regular additions to the roster? I know Zhu Yuan will be limited, but I’m curious, will every new character be limited or do they add some to the regular lost of characters? I want to pull Qingyi because she’s an S-class attacker, so I can dump Anton from my electric team, but I’m not going to pull on every limited banner.

A fundamental failing of this game is that there really isn’t enough content to keep player engaged. If, after only two weeks, there’s nothing for the player to do, why would anyone stick around? Presumably there will be more content in about ten days, but the odds that I won’t have moved on to greener pastures is slim.

A game that I can recommend, with conditions

This is whisky. If you know your limits, have rules and enjoy responsabily then you'll have fun. It's does a few things and it does them well: character design, art and style.

If you are an alcoholic, avoid it at all costs. But note, there is the chance that this games turns you into an alcoholic - a small one. …

This game's style is so fun, the world is magical. But i can't imagine playing the game for longer than 5 hours. That's because unlike starrail there is no new areas to explore. So you end up feeling like you are stuck in a really nice box. (release impression)

*A year later the game is in a much better spot. A lot more characters, double banners so more choice, and a bit less stingy. Getting to endgame content is a bit annoying, but once you are there the game feels really nice and the systems click toghther.

Going through the story will have you play with most of the characters. So you'll have a good idea if the game is worth your time.

I have a massive issue with how slow the dialogue is to progress. I read fast. I would rather there is no skip option and I can speed through. But at least there is a skip option. The static conversations are just far to mediocre and tendious.

I think that this game would have benefited from a 'less is more' approach to the story telling and only have the AA and AAA tier cutscenes. The A tier stuff is just... pointless.
