Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 redefined an already great game. Its addition of stellar new features (like Create-A-Park), and great game-play tweaks (the manual maneuver will be copied for years to come) made it the best installment in a killer series of games. Anyone who has ever skated the Philadelphia level will agree -- this game is a masterpiece of level design. Hell, it's a masterpiece all around. Maybe it's unfair or too ambitious to expect some amount of tutorial in a PS1 skateboarding game, but I was annoyed at how little the game provides in terms of explanation or guidance into the mechanics and world of skateboarding. I also felt deterred by how almost all the stages are locked behind progression and by the lack of different game modes/objectives to engage the player with. I think more varied gameplay options such as racing would have gone a long way.

I did appreciate that I could make my create a character 5 years old, balding with a mullet, and 387 pounds at least.

Checked out the GBA and N64 versions. I played very little of this series when it was current. These days, I'd probably stick with the semi-remade HD version for PC. Or there's a fan-made mod with tons of levels.
