I don’t know what it is, but I dislike this game. Somehow it fails to capture what I like about Doom 2016 and to a lesser extent Eternal. Playing this game isn’t fun or entertaining, it’s just spending my time doing something. It has no positive or fun value to me. Thank Kami I played it on game pass instead …

Edit: The shield is kinda neat though.

I didn’t really get that into “Doom 2016” and found Eternal rough to start, but still ended up being a big fan of that second game by the end. The relatively distinctive-feeling gameplay loop that forced you to be aggressive and switch up your tactics was very satisfying at the time. It’s been over 5 years though, and after revisiting those prior games and trying this one out, I’m not sure I’m really into this kind of thing anymore. Maybe if it had come out a few years ago, I would have got more excited about it, I just don’t really care right now even though this seems like a fine game.

Pandemonium difficulty is a fun time, but it is baffling how glaringly buggy it is. I had to redo 2 levels on my last and best run. Once I lost all of my lives and died at Chapter 19, I started a new file and there are no 1-ups for me to get. id Software needs to fix this ASAP. …

Edit: After this status update, I just had to start level 1 again after just beating it.

Edit 2: I have to do level 10 again

TLDR: The worst of the modern doom games but still a fun romp, not worth full price but worth playing on gamepass or on a discount.

More detail: Big downgrades in gameplay, story actually just wastes your time and is so bad i would legitimately recommend skipping all of it for better gameplay pacing. Games way too easy, even cranked up on nightmare it was a walk in the park. Secrets are trivially easy to find and completion is just a bit of a time waster tbh, puzzles are always dead simple and never made me feel clever. THE MUSIC!!! Compared to Mic Gordon's sountrack this games music feels like it was made by a vegan church group. Dragon and mech sections felt like a completely unfun waste of time. Core combat was the only redeeming factor and it is still quite a step back from 2016 and eternal's combat chess and tight encounters.

As I said at the top, fun for a few hours but nothing truly special here.

Still on my Pandemonium attempts. I've been getting a lot more consistent at getting through Chapter 4, 5, and 6, without dying. 4 was such a hurdle for me and 8 is still a weird one. Still on my Pandemonium attempts. I've been getting a lot more consistent at getting through Chapter 4, 5, and 6, without dying. 4 was such a hurdle for me and 8 is still a weird one. I broke my habit with Chapter 5 by going to the Super Shotgun first and then the Cycler and it made runs much smoother. I'm getting the hang of these weapon combos against certain enemies and I have been using my melee's a lot more. I'm at my best run right now with Chapter 9 where I died twice. Still, I can get lives back. I did good on my first go with Ch. 9. I feel like I am getting closer and closer to actually completing an Ultra-Nightmare run.

This game is trying to be edgy and cool in a juvenile way... and I love it. Robotic enhanced dragons with mounted machine guns, giant mechs, smashing through walls with shield bashes. Jumping out of giant flying fortresses and being picked up by your dragon buddy.

Pandemonium on Nightmare is quite the challenge. Especially chapter 5. It will likely be the biggest hurdle for Ultra-Nightmare. It replaces Extra Life mode in Eternal so that it makes you die and repawn at the start of the level for each life that you lose. Mixed on it, but I totally get the intention for those using this mode …

It's weird how the game where the Slayer jumps on his supersonic jet dragon and flies around blowing up demon warships feels like the most restrained entry so far.
