May or may not have played this game for 7 hours today... I’ll say no more after this until I finish it but man, it’s like an amazing TV show that always leaves you hanging. It’s covering such different ground in each chapter in terms of new characters and conflicts that you just never know what is going to happen, and yet everything seems to come back and have some relevance or purpose to the broader conflicts and mysteries in a really satisfying way. Even when it calms down there are always lingering questions.
Another thing making it addictive is the combat, which has really opened up after getting a 3rd and 4th party member. It’s all turn-based but it feels especially dynamic as characters move around like it’s a normal Yakuza brawl, setting up AOE attacks and use of environmental hazards and props. There’s also just something cool about seeing a realistic contemporary setting in a JRPG, especially as the protagonist’s overactive imagination warps common thugs into people with exaggerated proportions and powers with funny moves and status effects. Kinda Earthbound-y, actually.
When I bought the game, the question on my mind was how much I could play before setting it aside when Cyberpunk drops—now it’s more like, ok maybe Cyberpunk can wait a few more days...
