Dragon Age: Origins - First Impressions
It's really good so far. Which is kind of surprising for me because I don't have fond memories of the very little I played years back. The star of the show is the character writing for sure, the dialogue for Alistar and Morrigan especially is so excellent and the banter really characterizes them. That's another thing, characters bantering between each other in respect not to you i.e. NPC agency conversations is something so rare that's done so well here.
The story itself is kind of standard with the worldbuilding and pseudo-gray areas of the choices making up for the slack. The sidequests range from really good to pleasantly ok. But a lot of the game is focused on establishing the world you inhabit with codex entries every couple minutes being unlocked and that's all fantastically done. BioWare has never been particularly good at making a well crafted story though so it hits what I've come to expect on that front. The aesthetic and soundtrack is kind of ok too, the way the game looks hasn't aged well and I find a lot of the sounds of DA:O to be atmospheric and sleepworthy at times.
The combat is really nothing home to write home about, some very tolerable MMO-lite combat that you do WAY too much of even in the first several hours. It's already starting to wane on me so I put the difficulty on easy just so i could ignore it as much as possible, but there are exploits to make it even more broken in your favor.
Overall, I'm going to try to finish this game February. I'm working on too much as is but I very much enjoyed my time with this that I could.
