Dragon Power is an action-adventure game developed and published by Bandai for the Nintendo Entertainment System on March 3, 1988. It is a heavily localized version of the Japanese game Dragon Ball: Shenron no Nazo. Although some of the European releases retain the Dragon Ball assets (under the title Dragon Ball), the North American release removes most references to the franchise. The game follows the first two volumes of the Dragon Ball manga, as the young monkey-tailed boy Goku (along with his teenage friend, Bulma, known in the North American version as Nora), embark on a quest to find all … More

Along the way, they encounter various characters, including turtle hermit Master Roshi (Hermit in the NA version), shapeshifting anthropomorphic pig Oolong (Pudgy in the NA version) and desert bandit Yamcha (Lancer in the NA version). This port also has less stages than the original game. Less

Wellll, as it turns out, it's definitely not baaddddd but also definitely not as good as I initially thought. Here's the review I had started, but quickly started un-learning a lot of the things I thought (like that it's straightforward action fun, or that I was moving along quickly and enjoyable through the 14 stages heh):

Preliminary: Well, I came into this not expecting much. I don't know much about Dragon Ball, so there isn't the media connection for me. Also the average score here is quite low. But I had a blast playing the first 3 stages. At first I thought it felt clunky, but that's only because of the first-Zelda-style attack. And I soon upgraded my weapon anyway. The jump was cute and appropriate. The cutscene things are kinda meh, maybe I'd enjoy them more if I were a Dragon Ball fan, and the music got old quickly, but I'm having fun playing it!

If only the Look or Sound had something compelling to them

Play: The boss battles are a bit goofy, I wish you kept your weapon upgrades for them, since the health carries over... (turns out the weapons do carry over to the next level, …

Play: The boss battles are a bit goofy, I wish you kept your weapon upgrades for them, since the health carries over... (turns out the weapons do carry over to the next level, just apparently not the bosses? odd choice there). I probably should have played a fan-translated version (the English version is far too changed to be appropriate for this project), because there are a lot of cutscenes with dialogue. Luckily this website helped with the important parts. I laughed when I was trying to beat my way through a rock at a dead end and suddenly some frog character appeared saying Japanese letters at me haha.

Always nice to play a straightforward action game that I don't need a guide for, not stressing about convoluted secrets etc. Just kill things, see if I got a good upgrade (pro-tip: those thingies they drop, touch them not only for points but to spawn an upgrade)

Feel: I did get a little confused at the stage with all the houses with blue doors? They were like little mini-dungeons but it wasn't entirely clear which I needed to do, whether I needed to do them besides upgrades/healing items, etc. (Omg, lol, turns out it's not as straightforward as I thought and plenty of hidden areas, per a longplay I checked out to figure out what I'm supposed to do.... and what I thought were levels were parts of one stage lol.. only on stage 2 still)

Attachment: Again, I really should've done a fan-translated version, because I think I missed a lot of the show references and humor. I didn't realize how much dialogue this game would have! Judging by what I read about some panties, though (?), maybe I'm glad I didn't cuz it might have been some iffy stuff. Who knows. As it was, I knew I had 14 stages to play through, a very doable goal. A truly remarkable game would've gotten me to start over with an English-translated game, but a truly remarkable game this is not. Instead it's a fun straightforward action game, seemingly influenced by the action elements of Zelda (the enemies and combat in particular), that holds your interest for its relatively short length. (I was very wrong about the short length and the holding interest lol)

Playtime: ~30 mins

Wait why the awful ratings??? This Japan-only version of it is solid so far! Tho I'm only 3 "levels" in ha. This is like a more straightforward Zelda, set in the Dragon Ball world, with more easily attainable power-ups and healing. I dig it (so far)
