A decent rogue-lite clearly inspired by many games:

  • Rogue-lite in the likes of FTL and Into the Breach
  • Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor
  • Open world perspective from Chrono Trigger

A decent rogue-lite clearly inspired by many games:

  • Rogue-lite in the likes of FTL and Into the Breach
  • Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor
  • Open world perspective from Chrono Trigger
  • Timeline and battle mechanics from JRPGs, for some reason I can only think of FFX and the Trails series right now but pretty sure it's present in a lot of other JRPGs.
  • Pixel art style, present in many Indie games, reminds me of Duelyst and Dead Cells the most

Unfortunately there are clear problems. It's on the difficult side and each run takes about 6 hrs to complete. For a rogue-lite it's not a "snackable" experience. Also found the combat kind of boring, once you assemble your crew and find the optimal loadout it's easy to win most fights using the same strategy. In addition, some of the Epic level gear in the game is downright broken like those that grant armor and hp drain per attack. Lastly found the presentation kind of lackluster. Mostly fighting the same robot looking foes over and over. Music is a repetitive slow paced EDM-like track. UI is kind of hard to read once you get a full crew and the whole screen is filled with text and numbers. I finished a run and have no desire to keep playing.

Hades set a new bar for rogue-lite stories and Star Renegades simply doesn't cut it. The animated cut-scenes are nice but the infinite-dimensions plot kind of lacks impact and does not make me want to invest in the story or its characters. I'm aware Into the Breach uses the same plot device but I feel it succeeds because it doesn't emphasize the story as much.

great game.. runs can be a bit long which can be frustrating in a rogue lite , but if you don't mind that I highly recommend.

Will I ever actually defeat this game? No. Will I continue letting myself get killed by pryomaniacal mechs? Yes.

I really enjoyed this but it only kept my interest for about 5 runs. Just a wee bit repetitive. Fantastic Art style though
