Set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of the 1930s, Valkyria Chronicles depicts Europe divided in two and ruled by two super powers: the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, situated in the middle of the two superpowers territories, in an attempt to secure invaluable natural resources. Within this struggle a hero named Welkin, and his fellow soldiers of the Federation's 7th Platoon, are fighting back against the invasion and the Empires attempts to unify the continent under its power. During the ensuing war the Federation discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the "Valkyria" - an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. With this new discovery the fate of the Federation's ability to turn the tide of the war, and the hope for a better future, hang in the balance. “CANVAS” graphics engine: A unique engine that produces breath taking images that look like watercolour paintings in motion. “BLiTZ” tactical battle system: Experience strategic manoeuvring of units combined with conventional RPG gameplay, all layered on top of the moment to moment action afforded by real-time controls as players command each squad member and tank in battle. Fun enough on Steam Deck, great performance and can easily go through the cutscenes 1 at a time. Just beat mission 15. Fun enough on Steam Deck, great performance and can easily go through the cutscenes 1 at a time. Just beat mission 15. Story missions often boil down to playing long enough to figure out the gimmick then replaying with a strategy to beat said gimmick. I've heard that counterfire is more aggressive in the PC version thanks to the framerate. For me, it makes the game more interesting to have to use classes other than scouts and it gives an incentive to use the tanks more.

I'm on mission 14/18 of this game and can't decide how I feel about it.

Parts are great, but I also don't think components of the game work well. The turn-based activation is cool, and the class system works well, but I haven't grown attached to the characters. Maybe because leveling is by class, not by character, and the character …

Parts are great, but I also don't think components of the game work well. The turn-based activation is cool, and the class system works well, but I haven't grown attached to the characters. Maybe because leveling is by class, not by character, and the character traits feel tough to really trigger.

The art style and way the story flows work for me. However the light tone doesn't seem to fit with some of the dark moments it creates.

Continued from an old NG+ save to make progress towards 100%. It was fun to come back to, but it took time to get used to not having features the later games have.

Отличная игра, интересный геймплей и сюжет. Комиксовая рисовка на любителя, но сойдет.

I just finished chapter seven and even though there is some good stuff I don't think I'll go any further. This game falls into the category that didn't age well. Tank controls are clunky, ennemies turn takes forever and what bothers me the most is that I keep being slapped by the scenario. Almost through a mission? Here comes the semi god reinforcement that will kill your whole team while you wait for the ennemy leader to expose its weak point.

I would have probably loved this game when it came out but now I mostly find it frustrating

I wasn't sure what to expect from this game. The mix of real-time and turn-based strategy sounded downright weird and frankly something that would more likely be a massive failure than a success. You have a limited number of turns to move members of your squad to achieve a certain goal. With each turn when you move a member, s/he can get shot at but when you stop to aim then the enemies stop trying to shoot at you from what I remember. It's totally unrealistic and yet the mechanic works. I found the game to be quite fun to play with every mission being like a puzzle. Granted it was easy to make the scouts too powerful but for the most part all the different units had their uses. I like how you have many different characters to choose from with their own weaknesses and strengths with some characters being better with others or worse with others. It added some nice realism.

The storytelling was done very well with cut scenes that start from within panels in a book. I really like the water color used in the art style, just wonderful. The music is also good and appropriate. The main cast of characters are interesting. I feel like it really captured realistic concerns about the war. I personally didn't like the emergence of magic powers, which felt counter to the mostly grounded war story. But overall I still enjoyed playing this game and following its story.

The mood of a periodic piece of entertainment is high and immerses you. This is what differentiate from XCOM.

I rented this ages ago, and I remember really enjoying the beginning of the game. Either I've forgotten some important parts of how to play, or the difficulty has ramped up in a way that makes me unhappy, but I feel sort of done with it now. Which makes me sad.
