This videogame is a masterclass in sci-fi survival horror, set aboard the derelict spaceship USG Ishimura, the MC this time is an engineer called Isaac Clarke, battling grotesque "Necromorphs" and uncovering a chilling conspiracy, so a very unique MC compared to all the other military-oriented ones we had in the past. The game combines tight third-person shooting, atmospheric tension, and minimal UI design to create a deeply immersive experience, and for me the UI is a standout since it is very unique compared to what we had up until that point, and yet today we don't see this much attention put into making a unique navigation menu, which is a shame.

Its haunting audio design, strategic dismemberment combat, and oppressive environments make it a standout of the genre, in my opinion the sounds are what makes this game scary, it has a very grotesque tone to it, making you panic even though nothing is happening, and I know I'm not alone on this one. Despite some backtracking and stiff character movement, it's still a gripping and terrifying journey worth experiencing, not to mention it has a very bold story for a first entry, the ending is something I'll never forget, and definitely the most unique one out of all the other entries.

The grimy industrial interiors of the Ishimura, the flickering lights, and the unsettling animations of the Necromorphs all feel sharper and more oppressive when experienced with mouse and keyboard precision. While the PC port wasn’t entirely flawless at launch, once properly configured it became arguably the best way to experience the game, especially for players who value accuracy in combat and visual clarity in dark, claustrophobic environments.

What truly cements this title as a classic, though, is its lasting influence. It proved that horror games didn’t need constant jump scares or power fantasies to be effective, restraint, atmosphere, and smart design could be far more terrifying. The game’s confidence in its world-building, its willingness to let silence speak, and its commitment to a grounded, vulnerable protagonist set a new standard for the genre. Even years later, it remains a benchmark for sci-fi horror, and a reminder of a time when big-budget games weren’t afraid to take bold, unsettling creative risks.

A horror action masterclass game. Dead Space does so much to keep the player immersed which pays off when it's time to scare them.

Very interesting premise and world building, and a great introduction to this whole multi-media property.

Solid Space Horror

I like the game and the adventure. It's effectively scary and offers challenges, especially on the higher difficulties, but I didn't find combat to be particularly compelling. I think the game holds up but I didn't think it stood out.

Not as good as I was hoping for. The limb cutting mechanics don't require much in the way of creativity (glorified weak points) that I shot at with the plasma cutter without even needing to change from horizontal to vertical mode. Line gun can do the same thing and is overpowered, can clear every limb in a single shot. The rest of the weapons don't even seem to take note of the limb cutting mechanics and are more so for crowd control (pulse rifle, flamethrower) and seem like an afterthought (pulse rifle secondary mode does as 360 turret that somehow hits nothing). Other weapons like the contact beam and disc ripper I didn't use much since they were close range and not as strong as the others. Sections with zero g and disorientating walls repositioning was the best parts of the game, the boss in particular made you use all weapons alongside making use of kinesis. The story seemed rushed and was more interested in railroading from one location to another (find a thing to get to next area) without learning as much about the setting or characters.

A Haunted House In Space

This is a fantastic sci fi game. IT has a lot of attention to detail and really shines at times due to bits of it being quite refined. However, despite some of it's perhaps countless awesome ideas and execution thereof (Such as the UI for example) I found it hard to love this game. Playing it still feels like a cheap thrill ride through a haunted house. While that's not a bad thing, it tends to only go so far due to the emphasis upon the jumpscares.

I really want a plasma cutter now.

Yani...

This game is amazing. It delivers the scares promised! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The controls are impressively functional - once you get the hang of them. You can clearly see the painstaking details that went into creating its menus, environment and character animations. This is probably the game with the highest production values that I had come across and just plays great. Gaming dynamics like dismemberment, holographic displays that keep you in the game even when accessing inventory and selective upgrading of your weapons always keeps the player interested. Although, the storyline is by-the-numbers, it is a gripping and often surprising story. I'm not really a fan of horror games, but this was an engaging and entertaining game all the way through.

Everything was top notch here in my opinion, the gamplay, the graphics, the level designs, the story, the character interaction, and the foreboding atmosphere. A great game all around.

Sci fi horror if a bit dated now

Finished it. Graphics a little dated now and quite linear in nature. Quite an interesting story as I do like Sci Fi. A little bit tedious at points trudging around the corridors. More modern games have a bit more choices for players and a bit more variety in playing modes. It turns out the Scientologists did it!
