Remaster of The Outer Worlds
4.00 average rating based on 5 ratings
This is a review of the Spacer's Choice edition - basically a remaster with all DLCs. I wrote a review for the basegame back in 2019: Bordershock Effect: Fallramafly
Playtime: ~200-210 hours (finished 5 times)
Playthroughs
I also had three abortive starts that each only lasted 1-5 hours.

TL;DR: It's Deus Ex: New Vegas... in space!
TOW is a role-playing game in first person perspective, very similar to Fallout New Vegas, also made by Obsidian. At the start you pick your attributes and two skill groups to get a bonus in and then you are relatively free to explore the various planets. Throughout the game you can solve problems in a wide variety of ways, and you are invited/required to pick sides in conflicts. The game goes out of its way to accommodate this, you can literally kill everyone you meet and still complete the three main quests. …

Why is it so amazing?
Originally i didn't think that much of Outer Worlds. It seemed like a good RPG/FPS but kind of short and limited. It didn't live up to my expectations of being Fallout New Vegas in space. Then i replayed it and it clicked. This is one of those games that you have to replay to really appreciate. There are so many ways to play through quests that even after three playthroughs is still encountered new things. This ranges from small interactions like someone having different dialogue because i wore a Spacer's Choice helmet, to big ones like the existence of an entire backup NPC for one of the main quests. And there are quite a few proper choices that really change the way things end.
What is not so amazing
Originally many of my complaints were the result of playing very "gamey". Once i managed to strangle my inner loot goblin and appease my inner min-maxer i really enjoyed the game. The only real complaints i have are parts of the interface, the colour grading in the Spacer's Choice Edition sometimes being a bit too much and Parvati making the other companions look worse. If one of the problems your game has is that a companion is very interesting and impeccably voiced by Ashly Burch i'd say you did a good job.
Conclusion
This was the first game i did 4 playthroughs of, in a row too. Recently i did the same with Dishonored 2. If you, like me, enjoy trying out different things in a game and seeing different results, you will probably enjoy this. Just relax about doing everything at once and enjoy being a nice dummy or an evil murderhobo or whatever you want to play as.
