As with previous Professor Layton games, Unwound Future is an adventure game where the player solves puzzles offered by local citizens to progress the story forward, through dialogue and around 32 minutes of full motion video. The player moves about the game through still images of locations. The player can use the DS touchscreen to tap on non-player characters to start a dialog or to obtain a puzzle, and also can search anywhere on the background for hint coins, with some areas needing to be tapped several times to reveal a secret hint coin or puzzle. The player can use the DS touchscreen to tap on non-player characters to start a dialog or to obtain a puzzle, and also can search anywhere on the background for hint coins, with some areas needing to be tapped several times to reveal a secret hint coin or puzzle. Puzzles are brainteasers of many varieties, including visual, math, and logic. There is no time limit to solve puzzles, and the player can get up to 3 hints at a cost of one hint coin each; a new feature in Unwound Future is a "super hint", costing 2 coins, that can only be bought after the other 3 hints have been revealed, but that nearly reveals the puzzle's solution. If the player is correct in solving the puzzle, they gain a number of "Picarats", a form of currency within the game. Guessing the incorrect answer will reduce the number of picarats the player can get on subsequent attempts. Players can visit certain areas in order to play undiscovered or unsolved puzzles that are left behind as the story progresses. Less

A Game So Good I Cried

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future trumps the previous two Professor Layton games in every single way. It is truly the best one I played yet and I doubt Last Specter can overthrow this masterpiece

Taking place after the events of Curious Village and Diabolical Box, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future follows Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice, Luke traveling through time to rescue the Prime Minister of London while running into familiar faces from both the past and future. Time travel-themed stories can be very complicated. But this narrative is told masterfully and is the most personal and emotionally driven the series has ever been which had me too engaged for my own good.

This game increases the number of puzzles to 153 Story Puzzles and 15 bonus puzzles. Making it 168 puzzles. Once again, the picarat and hint coin system applies here the same as it always has but there are new ways to find these coins and puzzles such as poking around a bush or river. The variety of puzzles is absolutely spectacular. My main issue with the previous games was the fact that there were many puzzles that were repeated but just with an …

Once again, the picarat and hint coin system applies here the same as it always has but there are new ways to find these coins and puzzles such as poking around a bush or river. The variety of puzzles is absolutely spectacular. My main issue with the previous games was the fact that there were many puzzles that were repeated but just with an upped difficulty. Which is fine. But the issue was just how many there were. With Unwound Future, every puzzle in the game is unique with only a few being a repeat. So each puzzle is now super interesting and fun to solve. They even introduced Puzzle Battles which are basically self-explanatory. Once again, I solved every single puzzle.

The music is better than it has ever been and the cutscenes and animation are really good and never felt out of place. The twists and turns in the narrative had me glued the whole time and I loved the setting of future London. It was very fun to explore. This game is way too good for its own sake

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is the best one in the series yet. With amazingly designed puzzles, great music, animation, story, and an ending that actually made me cry, this game is among the best DS games I have ever played

A fitting ending to the trilogy
This review is for the Nintendo DS version

An excellent way to end the trilogy. with a moving story. The best story of all 3. I actually think the pacing and puzzles of Pandora's Box are better, however, the story here is the best of the 3 (by a hair's breath)

Shocking to think that an actual sequel is coming next year. There is another trilogy of Prof Layton games I am excited to play but those are prequels

In for a Bumpy Ride
This review is for the Nintendo DS version

It's really sad, especially at the end. It was sad for little Luke, and for Layton. Maybe Flora too?

The puzzles are very good, the story was well written. The plot twists were bigger than the last two and it really was unexpected.

I enjoyed the music.

Its the first two games but better
This review is for the Nintendo DS version

This story is so underrated. Its literally a DS puzzle game. It has no right having a story this good. Like I remember as a kid losing my mind during chapter 12 (the truth revealed) where all the shit goes down, where all the secrets are revealed, and when a giant mechanical beast is unleashed, kidnappings, car chases, like holy shit this is A DS PUZZLE GAME. It holds a special place in my childhood, and honestly I wish more people played it. (although I will admit that its a little slow around the middle)

1SR - Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

1 Sentence Review: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

The highlight of the Professor Layton series with both a great variety of puzzles, a bonus mode that could be a standalone game and a story that perfectly fits the wacky world of Layton, while concluding the trilogy with an emotional highlight that very few games manage to pull off.

Remember back in 2010 when everyone online had the massive hots for Older Luke? All the girls that really wanted to kiss him? That was pretty wild. Anyway, play Professor Layton.

Great puzzles and an excellent story. Wish it weren't the chronological end to the series though.

I last played this game in 2014. It's kind of crazy how many of the puzzles I do remember, even if vaguely.
