Gustave telling Maelle that she should stay in the Gestral village because it's safer is amusing to me because she'd probably as powerful as the rest of the party combined.

Also, devs making the sixteen-year-old party member the strongest is about as JRPG as it gets!

Holy shit Golgra has one hell of a health pool. Even if I were to parry every single attack, and she is damn fast, it would take a really long time to whittle her down. And that’s with the pictos that boost a solo fighter. I guess I’ll have to come back later.

Really loving all the optional bosses littered everywhere as well, can't get enough of that classic Mario RPG feeling that you can fell just about any giant if you're stubborn enough to learn their attack timings.

As soon as you nail the parry you never want to go back to dogging. And the game knows this, and is smart about it and is going to fuck with you in clever ways so that you don’t just have to parry your way to victory, you need to parry, dodge and jump. It’s so good!

Obtaining a red beret and red sunglasses for Lune by defeating a mime is pure perfection!

Genuine question, is story progress actually gated by this horrible parkour course? Because it’s really, really bad.

Verso might be my favorite character to play as. I got a strategy built around his follow up skill. The main Luminas used are Marking Shots and Rewarding Mark in order to get more chances to shoot more to follow up and I have Chevalam as a weapon to start off with S Rank in order to reduce the cost of follow up and to increase the damage output. Keep shooting until you reach 2 AP. It's great. It's what got me to beat the Sunless Cliffs mime on my 2nd go.

This game has an infuriating yet intoxicating balance that makes challenging an optional boss that you can barely dent seem simultaneously impossible and possible because, as long as you can parry, you can weather any storm of attacks. And when you nail that parry, everything other than the pure feeling of optimism and your sheer determination to succeed against all odds melts away. Yet when you are in this somewhat precarious position you know the fight will be a marathon and not a race, and one minor slip can spell the end. Such is my fight against the Chromatic Abbest that I lost at the bitter end when I mistook a double attack for a single attack and lost my parry rhythm and then failed. Yet once more into the fray I went!

My personal gripe with the game is how the storytelling of this game changes abruptly between these two acts. It becomes more complex very quickly with a new family introduced and a new set of motives thrown at you that it has me confused thoughout the epilogue and 3rd act. It is a lot to take in all at once. I got some stuff, but not enough for me to immediately be into where it is goin

Just a cool little footnote for folks who aren't familiar with French; I'm not either, but I find etymology really interesting.

A lot of French terms in this game have really interesting meanings, and I think the decision to leave them French makes the whole setting feel a lot more exotic.

Esquie means "you know", so to refer to something as "The Esquie" is like saying "The You-Know-(What/Who)". Gommage means "erasure," but specifically with an art eraser; "gomme".

Looking up the meaning of these French terms has been a fun little sidequest for me, because there's a lot of meaning packed into these terms. I think it's neat!

Major spoilers for both Baldur's Gate III and Expedition 33. Act III specifically

Shadowheart in this game really does have a Shadowheart moment where her hair turns white after discovering the truth about her family.

The excellent art direction and music are doing a lot of the heavy lifting, but I'm having a blast with the combat too, and the story beats have been perfectly meted out to keep the pace steady. Seeing this simple style of SNES/PS1 RPG done up with modern flair is nuts.

Only thing I'm unsure on so far is the parry system. On the one hand it's rad that parries are balanced to be powerful as hell, but they dish out so much extra damage that I'm worried they might sorta obsolete the need to dig into the details of each character's skillset.

I'm surprised at how much Geforce Now's Performance tier struggles with this game, especially in the open world and during open world combat. Makes me really miss my half-price Ultimate tier, but I suspect that's the entire reason NVIDIA discounted that GeForce Now tier for a limited time.

Have only just left the prologue, but this seems neat so far! Always love a Mario RPG-y timed hit system, and it's very cute that the main character's two abilities at the bottom of his skill tree are direct references to Crono's Luminaire and Confuse.
