I really wish I liked this more, but in the end I found the story a bit too simplistic in its approach and the barista mini-game simply lacked real substance. I wish there was more complexity to both. I adored the vibe of the midnight coffee shop, and loved the cozy feeling of the visuals and the concept for the game, but those aspects couldn't carry the lesser aspects like gameplay and story.

A Very Chill Experience For Those Late Night Reading Sessions
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

Coffee Talk took me by surprise. For something that was described as a "talking simulator", I ended up building a bond with the game.

The comforting chill-hop vibes, brewing coffee with some of the most relaxing sounds and a list of characters who have their own quirks - the game really grows on you and puts you in a very comfortable spot.

Highly recommend for a late night relaxing experience.

A chill game with cute art, simple drink making and some stories. It's a short game with simple dialogue and options to speed it up if you don't like visual novels like me. In the end, you get to see how the lives of the characters play out. The gameplay of drink making adds a nice touch as you're not just listening to people talk, you can experiment with drinks too. They look delicious and I want to try them all lol. Overall, it's a well-designed chill game but if you're looking for something more complex and deep, this is not it.

1 Sentence Review: Coffee Talk

An incredible cast of characters and an engaging world that the story is set in , although it is still a visual novel and the gameplay isn't too deep, definitely worth it for the relaxed atmosphere and great storytelling.

A pleasant night at Coffe Talk
This review is for the PlayStation 4 version

Coffe Talk

Coffee Talk is a visual novel where you play as a barista in a cafe. During the game, you talk to customers who tell you about their lives, etc.

My Opinion:

When I was a pre-teen, I was addicted to visual novels. So much so that one day I really couldn't stand the sight of those kinds of games anymore. All those games played and felt exactly the same.

But for me, Coffee Talk was different. The atmosphere, the characters, the humor, and all the lo-fi tracks playing in the background, all of that made the game special.

And not to forget, and this is perhaps the most iconic feature, you can even craft and design cafes and serve them to people.

IMPORTANT: YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS AT NIGHT... while drinking coffee.

Hug in a mug
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Coffee Talk brews a heartwarming experience that blends the charm of a cozy café with captivating storytelling. As a barista, players serve up not just coffee but also empathy, listening to the tales of diverse, endearing characters. The pixel art aesthetics and soothing soundtrack create a warm ambiance that feels like a hug in a mug.

Pros:

Immersive Narrative: Engaging stories explore love, friendship, and fantastical elements.

Relaxing Atmosphere: Tranquil coffee shop setting promotes a laid-back gaming experience.

Inclusive Characters: Diverse cast reflects a rich tapestry of cultures, enhancing relatability.

Cons:

Pacing: Some may find the slow pace and lack of action less appealing.

Limited Interactivity: Gameplay mainly revolves around dialogue choices, offering minimal gameplay variety.

In the end, Coffee Talk is a delightful blend of narrative and ambiance, perfect for those seeking a calming, narrative-driven escape.

If you dislike visual novels you will not enjoy this game.
This review is for the Xbox One version

Coffee Talk is far from a bad way to spend a few evenings, with some interesting characters and stories being told. For me though, the same sounding "voice" to each character, lack of real weight behind the issues it tries to raise and the uninteresting coffee making aspects bring the whole package down. I applaud the Toge Productions for trying to create something different, and hope they can refine this into something a little more fleshed out down the line.

A nice, short visual novel that takes place, well, literally last month, set in a Seattle coffee shop, if that Seattle coffee shop was in the world of Shadowrun, minus the armed conflict. The characters turned out to be quite likable, and I surprised myself at how much I enjoyed the game. The only downside is that there is almost zero gameplay, the only input you perform is making drinks. Even that seems to have little impact on the story. Nonetheless, the stories, fantastical characters, very well suited music, and visuals combine for a nice time beginning to end. Is what I would say, but man, the ending throws you for a bit of a loop with something maybe more sinister with the aliens going on? It’s all pretty vague, but I think the moments mentioned are where you made a wrong drink? I’d have to check. Really out of left field.

All in all, a pleasant experience. I’m sure those who enjoy VNs or games with... not much gaming would dig it. I’d recommend this title if you can find it for under $5, otherwise it’s a bit too short and a bit too non-interactive.

As a pixel lover - I couldn't let go. I had to play it and find out. The characters are well thought out and refined. It was a pleasure getting to know each of them. Sometimes I couldn't wait for them to come back to the cafe and say something interesting. Making coffees was nice and simple as well. The only thing that would be even better is the ability to make decisions in dialogues. Create the personality of your character in the game. The game is short and very quick to complete, but I didn't see any big problems with it. I even expected it to be a short-chill game. I recommend it to anyone who just wants to listen to interesting stories, make coffee and relax.

One of the most cozy and relaxing visual novels I have experienced so far! From the art style to the music to the narrative, it all worked together so beautifully to create a truly interesting and wholesome game. The dialogue felt true to each character as well as each character feeling so unique and well-realized. I loved the coffee making mechanic, I just wish we got to interact with that aspect of the game more often and I would have loved it to be a bit more involved than just selecting which ingredient. Unfortunately, I was terrible at the latte art aspect, but I appreciate that it was included.

All in all, this was a game that I didn't want to put down. It gave me all the cozy vibes I wanted from a game set in a fantastical coffee shop!

A Sweet Fun-Sized Visual Novel
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I didn't have much to do tonight so I made myself some tea and binged the last 5 days of the game. I think I'm coming away from it with a similar opinion to that which I had on VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action, which is kind of funny, as they're very similar in gameplay style. Though I think Coffee Talk has a much tighter narrative, being much shorter, and a more likable cast, VA-11 Hall-A has the edge in more interesting gameplay.

This is a nice little visual novel that acts more as a collection of stories loosely tied together by the titular coffee shop. I managed to finish all the character "arcs" in my playthrough save for maybe Freya's and uh, I guess Moe's? Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed that there really wasn't much to the ending besides the individual conflicts of the characters reaching their conclusions. The game just kind of ends all of a sudden, without much of a sendoff for some characters.

However, I really appreciated the stories themselves for what they were and the dialogue was very entertaining to read. Very well written, I'd say, though I'm not the best judge. It's …

Taking place in a fantasy Seattle where Werwolves, Vampire, Aliens, and many more creatures exist Coffee Talk excels at a fun and almost sad at parts story driven narrative. While there isn't much to go on gameplay wise, I still respect it because The Walking Dead games and Firewatch are some of my favorites, really the only thing you do is press A when the character is done talking and you make coffee for them. When you make coffee you go on your in-game phone and press the brewing app and as you make drinks you slowly unlock them in the app, some of the characters have a "favorite order" which they'll ask for every time, better get it right! The characters are actually fantastic and where the game really sucks you in. I'll talk about two characters, and while almost all are memorable in this game, these are my favorites. Bailey and Lua's relationship can almost be labeled as one character because it's all they really talk about whether together or separate. Their relationship really shows the player what's outside of the little coffee shop, it lets the writers be creative and talk about not just the characters we …

But all in all Freya is my favorite character, she's what drives the story forward, every time she walks in and sits down at the coffee shop the story continues. The writing in Coffee talk is solid but can sometimes dip below average. Overall... good experience that I may never play through again.

TLDR- Solid story, bland gameplay, average writing, great, compelling, and memorable characters.

3.5/5 Would recommend if you need something to play!

Coffee Talk is a visual novel. That means it's mostly advancing conversations. You play the owner/operator of a coffee shop in a world at a similar technological place, but populated by elves, werewolves, vampires, etc. And humans. There's a few humans, too. And as a coffee shop owner, you participate in the conversations patrons have, and those patrons become friends and confidantes.

Your character is never seen, so you can imagine them to be anything you want. I imagined human/female, which worked really well with the conversations. That said, your character is written to be the least interesting person in the conversations—kind, yes, but tinged with professional formality. This is much more about everyone else. There's a fun slate of patrons, each with their own little storyline that goes on a unique arc throughout the VN.

We have one element of interaction (beyond pressing A to continually advance the dialogue): Making drinks. There are a wide variety of drinks that can be made—some with specific names and recipes, others you can just cobble together on the fly from a variety of bases (coffee, tea, chocolate, milk) and flavor options (cinnamon, honey, ginger, etc).

Sometimes patrons request something specific (espresso, say) or something general ("warm and sweet"). And coffee-based drinks with milk can also be given "latte art" swirls on top—something that I didn't even see the need for, but which was a fun little mechanic to be included. (Thankfully, no one is actually judging the ensuing "art" as all of mine ended up looking a bit like a 3-leaf clover that had wilted.)

As the drinks are the one way we have any input, there is a bit of a puzzle with them. Not just finding a drink patrons like, but actually finding their trademark drink and giving it to them at the right time. Sometimes this is obvious (such as with the werewolf patron who leads you through this process in an understandable way), but other times it's not so obvious. I'll admit I looked several of them up on a walkthrough. I think that finding a character's drink (and, presumably, giving it at the right time) effects the way their story arc ends up, though I won't really know until I play a second time to see if those outcomes do, in fact, change. But it does seem as though the characters whose drinks I never found had less finality to their endings than those I did.

I would have liked Coffee Talk to have been longer, but it isn't as short as I was afraid it'd be. My biggest problem, actually, is with a small, stupid detail: At the end, the character endings are delivered via paragraph-long summaries. The game stacks those summaries so there's multiple per screen, but unlike with the dialogue there's no choice to advance the screen—and the timer those screens are on is too damn short. I didn't have enough time to read Freya's ending—and she's the main character (even more so than our perspective character). And I wasn't going to reload my prior save (which was, like, several hours back) just to read those few sentences. Why not advance those pages with a button press like the dialogue?

But the real draw here is the characters. I came to love and enjoy each of them. It was satisfying seeing their stories arc in and out of the coffee shop. If I play this again, it'll be to spend more time with them. And like a real coffee shop at its best, the experience is relaxing.

People not used to VNs may be thrown for a loop by dialogue-heavy element of the game, but Coffee Shop ended up a really nice experience that I enjoyed spending time with.

I knew going in that it would not be my kind of game but it was not bad, kind of like watching a movie. The story and characters were interesting enough. I was not expecting the world building to have fantasy creatures. That made it feel a bit like Shadowrun but I'm not sure it added anything worthwhile to the game. The only significant input I had was failing to notice the new "tea" ingredient for the werewolf until near the end, and I messed up every order that had a name with no clue to the ingredients. I guess you were supposed to experiment during each day, or on endless mode. I did not like the lack of input on the story. I would have encouraged the girl to not neglect her normal job for a maybe book deal, the elf and succubus to break up, and ratted out the alien to the authorities. I desperately need someone to sell me on this game. I’ve been struggling to get through it over the last couple weeks. I played through a few nights the first evening I played it. Since the. I’ve played one night here and there because I find it hard to convince myself to keep playing.

I’m surprised. I really thought I’d enjoy this more than I am. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it. It’s a bit one the nose but I don’t mind, I’ve played other visual novels that are equally so.

Tonight was the first night that I started the game from the menu rather than from a suspended state. And I learned that I’m only about a fifth of the way through the game. That can’t be possible and I don’t know how I can get through the rest.

I can’t figure out why I’m not having a good time.
