Back in the retro mood, thought I’d finally fire this one up for the first time. I’ve played a bit of the original F-Zero and a bit of GX like 16 years ago, but that’s the extent of my F-Zero experience. Wow, this game holds up better than 99.9% of the Nintendo 64 catalogue, that’s for sure. Feels fantastic to play. Some of the tracks really nail this feeling that you’re in control but everything could go off the rails at any moment, real rollercoaster feeling I rarely get from a racing game. The risk and reward of boosting consuming health and only having a small stretch to recover is a brilliant mechanic. Great music and sound, and I personally really like the simple visuals. I almost feel like busier visuals would make it harder to play. I scraped by and barely won my first Grand Prix on lowest difficulty, looking forward to seeing what else this game has to offer.
