This is one of the most chill, pleasant, and relaxing gaming experiences I've ever had. And that is ultimately the best thing about Boyfriend Dungeon and why it gets my recommendation. This game is the definition of immersive escapism with great music, chill vibes, and a really cozy and comfortable atmosphere.

Sunder

The most distinct aspect of Boyfriend Dungeon is probably its structure. The game is split between a roguelike dungeon-crawler like Hades and a dating sim in which you date (or befriend) the various people in Verona who turn into the weapons you wield in the dunj. The game is fairly casual in both regards. The roguelike side is by far the easiest of the genre that I've played and you really don't even need to complete all the dungeons to see the whole main story. The dating sim is also pretty forgiving since, as far as I can tell, you can't really miss out or fail any of the routes, and none of the various love interests will get overly jealous or block you from progressing the others. I was able to date everyone to the conclusion of their routes and from what I can tell, you can still progress those arcs regardless of your dialogue choices so you don't need to worry about screwing up in that regard either.

I think this casual experience is what also gets the game some hate since admittedly it does feel a little shallow in some sense, but I think that the ease of both sides of the game really contribute to that golden goal I mentioned of just being a really comforting experience. I could turn off my usual try-hard gamer brain while hacking and slashing through the dunj and I could enjoy role-playing my choices with the romance without stressing about screwing up any of the routes and missing out on story like you might in a lot of dating sims. I would've liked a bit more to the roguelike side, but for the most part I feel like the "shallowness" is part of keeping the game casual and chill. The two sides of the game are also rather interrelated. You're locked into one level up per weapon per run through the dunj. After you level, you need to complete a date scene with that character/weapon before you can level it further, which was a cute way to add a reasonable progression gate while also tying the two sides of the game together rather neatly and encouraging using a diverse array of weapons on each of your runs.

Dunj

Admittedly, I'm not much of a dating sim player and haven't completed many visual novels. This was one reason I wasn't sure about this game when I was considering it. But I still found the story plenty enjoyable. The different characters you can date have pretty distinct routes that explore not just romance but a variety of topics and even some serious issues that, in my opinion, were handled with adequate care, though there's mostly nothing too dark in the game. Further, the game doesn't penalize you for not wanting to go "further" with some characters and even the characters themselves tend to be quite chill about it when you tell them to back off or slow down.

enter image description here

My favorite routes were probably Seven, Leah, and Jonah, but I enjoyed them all to some extent and in different ways. There's a good variety to the characters as well. Despite the title of the game, this isn't a typical otome game. The devs wanted a diverse and inclusive game so you're allowed to choose whatever pronouns you want and can still date the full cast, which includes multiple male, female, and non-binary characters, regardless of your choice. There's even a cat you can date (not in a weird way, or at least not in that kind of a weird way). Boyfriend Dungeon is one of the most LGBTQ friendly games I've played. I specifically picked it to play during Pride Month so I'm glad it delivered on this front. This is just another way in which Boyfriend Dungeon makes you feel cozy and welcome, regardless of who you are.

The best thing about Boyfriend Dungeon is the vibes. I love the music in the game. It's one of those games where it's not one or two songs that you really like, but instead there's just one or two songs that aren't the jam and the rest are bangers, especially the (thankfully numerous) vocal tracks. The songs are also notably written to fit the game with lyrics that clearly reference the game's themes and concepts. I've already bought the soundtrack and listened to it several times (I'm listening to it while I'm writing this!). The simple but fun art of the environments and characters contributes further to the laidback feel. While not the whole script is voiced, the voice acting is quite strong. And further, there's a lot of humor in the game and while some parts were funnier than others, pretty much none of it fell flat or felt cringey to me, which is significant for a game focusing on humor. I had a number of laugh-out-loud moments throughout the game and I have to say, despite how cheesy it sounds, most of the time I played this game I had a full-on smile on my face. I highly recommend this game to play after a long or stressful day when you need to just check out and forget real life for a bit. That's how I played it and at times, it was exactly what I needed.

At the end of the day, this game is pretty short, simple, and sweet. It in some ways feels weird rating a game so highly that you can (quite easily) beat in a few hours if you want. But as I red-facedly admitted above, I was smiling pretty much the whole time I played. Even if I was ultimately left wanting a bit more, that experience makes this an easy 5 stars that I highly recommend to a wide range of gamers (and even non-gamers!). I love this game.

Boyfriend Dungeon is game #1 from the Humble Bundle Pixel Pride collection. Looking to challenge my usual video game buying habits and experience something new and refreshing!

Have you ever looked at a sword and thought hell yeah I'd like to take that out to dinner? Well this is the game for you. Boyfriend Dungeons premise is that there are people who can turn into weapons, and people who weild those weapons. You're a weilder in a town / city that's being invaded by monsters who are actually peoples fears that have manifested themselves in physical forms, you're also trying to navigate your own life and find someone special.

The game is part casual dungeon crawler and part dating sim - a combination I thought would never work. You have your apartment where you can craft a few things, check your texts which act as a sort of quest screen, and dress yourself and then you can head out to partake in the two main activities: dates and dungeon crawling missions!

I was not prepared for how engaging the gameplay loop is and how well everything works together. The process of finding weapons (who are...people) during the dungeon crawling sections, chatting with them, and then going on dates with them afterwards is oddly satisfying. After you've met someone new you can choose to take them with you in their weapon form into the next dungeon crawl. Each person, or weapon, has different levels and abilities. You'll meet a variety of people throughout your journey. Going off the games name I was under the impression that they'd all be Jesus looking figures boasting a six pack and a leather jacket, but I came across a painter called Valeria recently and she was completely different to the other characters I had met!

The innuendos in some of the dialogue sections really caught me off guard and now they're my favourite part of the game. They're laughable and ridiculous but it works, it plays so well into the dating sim aspect.

The combat is simple yet fleshed out enough to be satisfying, the dialogue and date scenarios are fun, the music is really good too - the production just feels spot on.

It feels like there's some kind of emphasis on how you interact with people throughout the game that I think spills over to the real world too. Things like talking to people kindly, noticing toxic behaviour from some of your potential dates, the notion of consent, being supportive etc. Maybe i'm reading into it too much but I thought these were nice things to include in a game, after all they're important aspects of life that aren't highlighted that much in bigger budget games.

I really appreciate the thought that's gone into the more sensitive topics too. At the beginning it notifies you that topics of kidnapping and stalking will be discussed incase that is an issue for anyone. It also lets you know that a supportive figure called "mom" will text you occasionally and that you can disable it if it makes you uncomfortable - small touch but It's nice that they're thinking of people who might not appreciate these things.

Overall I'm really taken back by Boyfriend Dungeon. I wasn't really expecting to like it much at all going in, but I love it! Looking forward to playing a lot more of it and seeing what else it has left to offer.

It just needs a little more time!

The first 2/3rds of this game, as of 2/11/2022, is very good. Once you're in the latter third though, it becomes clear that the devs needed more time to tighten up some of the writing and dungeon mechanics. They even hint as much regarding future updates. Most importantly, it feels like a third dunj should exist.

Aside from that, there's nothing quite like this game. If you want a short, funny experience with writing that is sometimes pretty great, consider giving this a go. Also, the devs did a lot of cool stuff with content warnings, nonbinary characters, etc.

Visual novel/dungeon crawler/dating sim

This was more or less as expected, though the plot took a few twists and turns.

It was competent in all of the areas it tried to do, but not a stand out in any of them.

I felt compelled to pursue all of the story lines to completion, but I don't think it was necessary in the end.

Fun short game

Fun 10 hrs (every achievement) game, not a very deep otome game or a deep dungeon game. But entertaining nonetheless, cute characters, nice storyline. 7/10

As usual, you can find my full review in spanish in GamerFocus.

Btw, this game is very diversity-friendly. You can be the gender you want and there's several non-binary characters in the cast. Everyone is also bisexual for some reason and you can romance several or even all of them (except the cat, of course) at the same time. This is some kind of polyamory heaven.

Or it would be if not for the annoying stalker.

I had been waiting for this title to come out for a long while. I'm pretty choosy with my dating sims. Feel the Magic X/Y and Rub Rabbits were one of my favorite titles in the DS era, and one of the first games I bought and enjoyed on the PS1 was Thousand Arms, though I could not get into Kawato Shoujo, even though I was very excited about it when the art surfaced on 4chan before the game was even made. I guess I need more solid gameplay elements instead of JUST a dating sim, so I felt right at home playing Boyfriend Dungeon.

Firstly, I'd say that the game suffers from pretty much all dating sim problems. Certain choices can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, and knowing the "right" answer is difficult. I guess, the same can be true of real people. But having your answers be vague and ambiguous in meaning is not something that happens in real life.

The game plays well! The dungeon elements are charming and wonderful, and the way many weapons play out in the dungeon are fun and diverse enough to offer real significant changes in playstyle. Some weapons are faster than others, and offer different effects when it comes to stun, critical, confusion, burning damage, etc.

The people are charming and the voice acting makes the characters really spring to life. I can tell the game was made with a lot of love. I played the game primarily with my girlfriend and we had a lot of fun geeking out over the characters.

There is a bit of "controversy" when it comes to the villain of the game. Apparently, a lot of people were triggered with the way the game sets up its stalker antagonist. Some fans of the game even went so far as to shame the voice actor who portrays him, telling him that he's a bad person for doing this sort of work. Obviously, nothing could be further from the truth. He's just a voice actor, and the villain he portrays has no bearing on the kind of person that he is. I feel really bad for him, and kinda disappointed with people.

enter image description here

Me and my girlfriend did have sort of an argument with how to handle his character in our playthrough. While my GF wanted to instigate situations in order to discover more of the dialogue, I personally played the game more similarly to how I would handle those sort of situations in real life. We wouldn't have full blown out arguments or anything, but she would ask me how I would want to reply to certain situations and I would tell her I didn't want to feed into what the villain did and give him any sort of attention or acknowledgement, but I could see how that would be sort of not fun. After all, the charm of many dating sims isn't just about what the right reaction and dialogue choice is, but sometimes it is nice to discover what the developer has in store behind some of the doors that are obviously marked "wrong choice". Sometimes, you wanna offer someone who doesn't like chocolate some heart shaped chocolates just to see what they would do.

My mentality about it, however, was that even if nothing matters because it is all just a game, the choices we make are still a reflection of ourselves and we still have to live with those choices. This is sort of a Westworld/Palm Springs sort of situation, and it shows a lot about the kind of person you are.

But enough about that sort of ideological question. The game itself is fun! Lots of characters to date (9 of them) and one of them is even a cat! Something else that also surprised me was that the game was populated with more than just boys to date. There were a few girls and even a non-binary person, which was pretty dope.

Pick it up if you're even a little bit curious and looking to date your weapons to unlock skills and have a good time. The game is short. Our playthrough was probably about 6 to 8 hours, but you can extend the game for a longer time by dating everyone to the point of maxing out their abilities/stats.
