The titular Lucky poses with the book that represents your in-game progress

I played New Super Lucky's Tale on PC and Steam Deck (I went back and forth thanks to cloud saves) and really enjoyed it! It's a fun and surprisingly polished little throwback to linear 3-D platformers.

If I had to nitpick: I wish you could retry levels faster! It makes 100% completing some of the autorunning levels and a couple of "don't get hit" achievements pretty tedious. But otherwise, this is a lovely, chill game to play over a weekend.

Alright, that's another 100% added to the list. Great time overall. Hope there's another one eventually.

This was great for a while until I realized I'm literally dumber than a child and cannot beat puzzles in a kids game. Oh well.

This was on sale for 9 bucks and I figured I'd end the year with a good, cute platformer for the 9 year old girl who lives inside me lol

New Super Lucky's Tale Review

nice cool , takes obvious inspiration from nintendo classics (light themes , easy cheerful plotlines and killing enemies by standing on them) but has its own charm all the same.

Designed to give joy for several evenings..

It seems that everyone agrees that Super Lucky doesn't bring anything new to the genre. There's a lot written about the inflexible camera, which is an atypical game design decision (you have to go somewhere to see if there's something hidden there, not just peek). There's a lot written about the inflexible camera, which is an atypical game design decision (you have to go somewhere to see if there's something hidden there, not just peek). Most of the time it works, but when you need precision in all 3 axes, like jumping on a flying bee, it's confusing. Nevertheless, most of the time it is very enjoyable, mostly due to its excellent cast of colorful and well written characters. It's certainly a good game for a kid, or an adult who wants to play something fun and cute.

Playing New Super Lucky's Tale on the Switch and it's a great time. Pretty easy so far (I 100% completed the entire first world in 40 minutes, would have been closer to 30 minutes minus the load screens).

Playing New Super Lucky's Tale on the Switch and it's a great time. Pretty easy so far (I 100% completed the entire first world in 40 minutes, would have been closer to 30 minutes minus the load screens).

Seeing the same issue I ran into with A Hat In Time - the load times are maddening. I feel like I've spending most of my playtime looking at unnecessary load screens! Load the hub world? Load screen. Enter a level? Load screen. Enter a puzzle within the level? Load screen. Finish it in 1 minute, another load screen to get back to the level. Fall into a pit? Well, we've gotta load the entire level from scratch again. Finish level? Here's another cutscene + load screen!

It's like Breath of the Wild shrine levels of loading screen brutality. Once you've seen Link enter and leave a shrine 30 times, you just don't need to see it anymore!

OTHER THAN THAT - it's great fun and I think I am still leaning towards A Hat In Time to be the reigning champ of modern 3D platformers, but I think that's more due to the fact that it feels like Mario Odyssey with the control scheme, and Super Lucky's Tale is a little slower paced but not really all that challenging, although of course that could all change.

I came in with low expectations for this game and it certainly exceeded those. Although it didn't grab me at first, I came back to it weeks later and found myself enjoying it enough to play through, including the 2 DLC's.

It's a bit of a collect-a-thon, which I am partial to for the record. It plays similarly to a Crash Bandicoot, with 3D platforming spattered with some 2D and other mini-games/puzzles. The camera is a bit problematic at times, and it's often hard to know exactly where you or enemies are on the z axis. I didn't find it game-breaking or too frustrating but there were definitely times where I would have preferred it to be more polished. The enemies are quite samey and I feel that's an area where they really should have expanded in the DLC (they didn't). I also thought they missed opportunities to explore the game mechanics more deeply, or introduce new ones. Similarly, the story is pretty flat and not something I paid much attention to.

That all being said, I really enjoyed the game itself and most of my complaints are just looking for something a little deeper. I enjoyed that the levels were somewhat varied and that there was a familiar structure to the collecting, so there was never a danger that you would miss something important.

If you're a fan of 3D platformers, give it a go, but if platforming isn't your thing I'd probably give it a miss as the lack of polish would be very off putting I would imagine.

In conclusion, I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could, but given the poor reviews it was given and how I did have a little soft spot for it, I've rounded up rather than down.

The last world of Super Lucky's Tale was pretty cool and the game got much better during the last two worlds. It's sad that the game seemed to end too abruptly instead of having one final world. One of the bosses that I think is DLC isn't in the main game which is weird? I guess I might play it since I want to talk about it more, but I feel like one additional world was missing.

The last boss difficulty is what I wished the earlier ones were like. Not too difficult, but having to actually be aware of the projectiles coming at you. I feel that the game benefited from the VR it has on Xbox since I can see it being used for certain levels with depth perception issues.

Still much better than I thought it would be and I am glad that I played it. I hope the Nintendo Switch version comes out and does well. I can see this being a series if they improve on the next game with a more personality for Lucky, better controls and full control of the camera.

In this world, you fight the second of the Kitty Litter, Tess. The theme changes with more mechanical obstacles and enemies which is coo since Tess is all about that life.! At first, I thought they were going to reuse all the first enemies and NPC's from the first world, but it changed.

The difficulty rises as expected of the second world, but it was still fairly easy. Every couple of levels the game changes to keep it fresh. I didn't talk about it in the first post, but there are collectibles like coins & clovers. I completed this world in the same play session and it had a couple more levels I think. I might 100% this game as it only has 6 worlds and it doesn't seem to be too long.

I guess we will see!

I like how the doors for the levels remind me of DK 64 and the platforming is sort of like Super Mario 3D World. Some other mixes of various platforming games that I played too like Bugs Bunny Lost In Time where you can burrow through the ground.

Does anyone remember that game? Haha.

It is also interesting that it goes to 2D sections for some levels or transitions.

It has a lot of the same problems as those older games, primarily with camera issues and the platforming itself feeling a little floaty and hard to land correctly. The level design feels like it took a page from Mario Galaxy in that most of them are a bit shorter and focused around a single theme or sometimes a new mechanic which keeps things feeling fresh and briskly paced. It doesn’t achieve anywhere near the heights of Galaxy, and feels a little rough and low budget overall but it’s a fun entry in an under-served genre.

I'm decent at games, not too great, so I imagine someone who is skilled may get bored with it seeing as ultimately it is a childish game where 100%-ing it almost naturally occurs during normal gameplay. I had to replay a couple levels to 100% it but ultimately it was still a short, fun romp. Not too long but really I think if it went on more than another world or two I would have found it tedious.

On a side note; is it just me or do the NPC's speak Simlish??
