I love RTS games and really missed Warcraft recently so I started to get into some games I missed out before. CoH is praised as one of the best RTS games, but in my book, it's hardly real time at all. As someone who played wc3, sc2 or aoe 2 a lot, this game is waaaaaaaaay too slow for me. I guess it's very tactical and certain players like this, but I get bored and impatient super quickly. I play RTS to get the feeling I am doing a lot and am being very active, CoH gives me the opposite feel. It's a chill game to drink/smoke to probably.
One more thing: You can't control single units. You always control one squad, which means you can't precisely move single units which feels terrible, especially because you are required to interact with the terrain a lot. At first I thought: this is crazy, how could they do this! But if it works, well... In the end, I have to say that it still feels bad somewhat.
Recomendo.
Four campaign missions in and I am not terribly invested in the gameplay.
The production value, particularly considering its from 2006 is amazing, sound, artwork, destructible terrain, destroyed vehicles remaining and creating new cover, all amazing.
But so far I have found the actual strategic choices and gameplay bland. The base building (at least up to this point of the campaign), if a bit nonexistent, and the units I have used so far don't really have a ton of variety in how to use them.
I like the command abilities and wish there was more choice behind which paths to take.
I also think the general play loop of needing territory to produce resources, but then needing more manpower to protect that territory, is something that doesn't click as well for me. I prefer something like Ages of Empires, where I can just build more workers and find resources to mine. I remember having similar struggles with Dawn of War which this is based off of.
