Dual review: Normal + Ultimate Edition

Playtime:

  • 12,5 hours for Ultimate Edition (campaign beaten, not all stars gained)
  • Probably 15-20 hours for playing the normal campaign twice (all stars gained)

Intro

Cursed Treasure 2 is a classic Tower Defense game that you can play for free in your browser or on Steam. There are two versions; The normal version is just the browser game offline. The Ultimate Edition is pretty much the same but with three extra maps.

The Good

  • Cute enemies, sounds and effects.
  • Tons of different enemies with all kinds of different traits.
  • Really solid gameplay.
  • Night mode is a fun alternative that i haven't seen in any other TD game.
  • Lots of different skills.

The Bad

  • Only three different towers with two upgrade paths each.
  • Only two spells and one is meteor. Zzzz.

The Ugly

  • Some bosses require you to repeatedly click on objects they spawn. It really detracts from the otherwise relaxing gameplay and it doesn't help your cursor is hard to spot.
  • The Ultimate Edition only adds three maps.
  • The Ultimate Edition requires lots of grinding to be able to level up.
  • The game encourages you to go back to old missions to gain all three stars on normal and night mode, but the Ultimate Edition gives almost no XP for replaying maps. You actually get way more XP if you just start the highest map available and lose. It's probably the worst XP design i've ever seen.

Conclusion

Cursed Treasure 2 is a really fun Tower Defense game with a lot of variety in enemy and object design, which makes up for the limited amount of towers and spells. For the most part it's nice and relaxing, and you can always grind a bit to unlock new skills if you're stuck.

The Ultimate Edition is a bit of a disappointment however. It only adds a paltry three maps and has worse balance, resulting in necessary grinding. It's still a good game, but those three maps aren't worth €7,39.
