landratov's review of Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem

This game has rather poor reviews, but I can't agree with them. It's quite decent ARPG, visually beautiful and fun to play. A lot of people complained about bugs, but I didn't met any except the lags in online mode, so I had to play offline. There is an original universe and story, nothing exceptional though, interesting skill system (combination of Diablo 3 and PoE), and end-game content.

Wolcen is not a great game, but it deserves to try if you want to play something Diablo-like.

Diableh

Playtime: 35,4 hours (main campaign + endgame campaign + other characters)

Intro

It's Diablo but with characters that look like they're from Warhammer/40K.

The Good

  • It's actually single-player, no always online bullshit.
  • You can even cheat by editing a simple text file!
  • Gameplay is decent.
  • Skill gems are easy to get.
  • Respeccing is cheap.
  • Endgame is fun for a bit.
  • Decent variety in enemies.
  • Some really nice gore and goofy ragdolling.

The Bad

  • The story sucks but that seems to be legally required for ARPGs.
  • The game still has multiplayer components like "press X to start the event".
  • Endgame (endless repeating boss campaign) had a bug that reset my run.
  • Endgame costs are utterly ridiculous. Upgrades cost 15-20 times what i made during normal gameplay (you can cheat to get gold, but still).
  • Skills are limited to weapon types, basically defeating the entire claim to class freedom.
  • Rage converting to mana is kinda annoying as a rage character.
  • It's literally Diablo with Warhammer characters, almost nothing original here.

Conclusion

If you're already done with Diablo 3, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn and Victor Vran you may want to give this a try (if it's on sale). It's nothing special, but …

Aucune optimisation
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

BUGGY AS HELL!
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

After almost 6 hours of gameplay, and so many in-game bugs and annoyances that I chose to neglect.

In the poor end, THE GAME DOESN'T SAVE! Why you ask? Because my PC username is has special characters! Like OMFG!!!!!

At first I was attracted by the visuals of the game but turns out that this game is completely not what I wanted to play. First of all, I realize I don't like the genre. Second, the game itself is not of a high quality. The game is not that pompous as I though of it. The story and acting is mediocre. And the most important the gameplay is not satisfying at all, it just not fun to fight, there is no responsiveness or fun in it.

So, at the end of the normal game there's an endgame which revolves around doing rogue-like missions. Each mission makes the endboss come closer. If you lose against him the "loop" starts over with you keeping everything except defensive buildings. It takes a ton of time (5 hours at the very least) and resources to build them and play missions until Ahriman arrives.

So of course if the game bugs out and you can't complete the final fight the game just resets the loop. Makes perfect sense, right? Wow.

Still very much bug ridden with my character suddenly loosing the ability to do anything but walk around at any point (mid-boss fight anyone?). Visual glitches also happen with enemies literally teleporting or dissapearing.

I tried my best could not get myself to finish the final boss and dropped the game. Solid entertainment, but not one I would be prepared to try and play on anything higher than normal.
