I don't know what it is, but for some reason I like the Lego games set in the LOTR franchise. I liked this one too. There are now materials that you can use to build things in the Overworld and that you need for mithril items. It's quite nice, but sometimes it's annoying to have to grind materials. Funnily enough, only the first two Hobbit films are available in the game story and not the entire trilogy. Also, it's terrible to complete the game 100% because the world is filled with irrelevant mithril bricks.
I've played a few Lego games, and this is by far my least favorite. I got this for free a while ago at Humble Bundle and I'm glad I did not spend money on it.
I didn't really like the somewhat open world and all the extra quests that were available. I think I would have rather had longer, more thought out linear levels. I didn't even realize the story had ended and was looking around for another quest when I realized it was over. Not sure why they didn't wait and release this at the end of the movie trilogy since that's what they were basing it on.
Has some of the funny Lego moments that have come to define the franchise, but they seem few and far between. Would not recommend unless you really love Lego games.
Walk around, hit things, pick up coins. That's about 70% of the game. The rest is truly awful QTEs and other scripted nonsense. You will encounter an obstacle, and there's only ever one solution to get past it. This is rather ironic considering that Lego always allowed you to be creative as a kid.
The game also loves to not explain things. I had absolutely no idea what to do at the start, i only found out how to progress because i started hitting things out of boredom. The game also tells you you can purchase characters but who knows how that works. And what is the money good for? Just for that? What are those white blocks for or those colourful things? What are events? How do you get there? The list goes on and on.
I played this for two hours thinking the introduction was just boring and linear and the game would open up after that. It doesn't. And like the movies it only gets worse. It's boring, tedious, constrained, repetitive garbage in a beautiful world that deserved better.
The split screen for this makes my head hurt. The way it has a gauge of when the two players are too far away from each other is very finnicky and the way that it goes back and forth so suddenly (and diagonally!) really makes the head spin. I think the girlfriend is enjoying the game?
I finally managed to complete this to 100% and now I’m exhausted. Don’t get me wrong Lego games aren’t hard but constant bugging and crashing makes this much harder than it should. I had to restart over 20 times because some issues and 4 times game crashed on its own. That aside I still like Lego Hobbit. Too bad the game was never finished. I didn’t like the third film that much so I’m kind of fine how it is because now I don’t have to play it but it unfinished product is always unfinished product. I’m happy that I played it but never going to do it again. Lego Lord of the rings other hand. I think I’m going to play it third time.
Way upset by the completely incomplete feeling of the ending.
