What else can be said about this beautiful game, that hasn’t been said before? This game is wonderful. The art stile, world and music are absolutely top tier. Definitely one of the most beautiful worlds that I ever had a pleasure to immerse myself in. Hollow Knight is the first metroidvania game that I ever played. It opened my eyes to this game genre that I haven’t experienced before.

But is the Hollow Knight a perfect game for you to try? Yes and no. While I absolutely recommend the game, there are some things to be aware of before diving in.

First of all, the game is hard. It does require quite some grinding to beat it. One major flaw that it has is the fact that the game feels the hardest in the beginning. That turns away many players and it also turned away me when I first tried it. I beat the first boss and found my way to the next stage. But the second boss was too hard for me. Especially with the fact that I had to backtrack through enemies all the way to the boss when I died. I put the game away for 2 years and I finally revisited it this year. This time I was a bit more determined to beat the goddamn boss. And I did it. And after that I had a blast. Every upgrade I got, introduced even more fun to the game. And I couldn’t wait to see what area I will unlock next.

But to get to this level… boy it takes long. At the beginning you just jump and slash. Very basic and weak movement. And you get killed all the time. But with different upgrades, that you get along the way, you are pretty much flying around and killing everything that touches you. And this is where the fun really begins. The only problem is that you start to get a taste of that after many hours in the game. I think it is around 10. And 10 hours of potentially punishable and frustrating gameplay is not something that many players are willing to go through.

But unfortunately that’s the barrier that you need to cross in order to conquer the Hallownest. By far the best advice I found on internet in order to beat the bosses and enemies in that game is to first wait and just dodge the attacks at your first encounter. Learn their attacks first and then strike when you see the opening in their pattern. My biggest mistake usually was to just go straight into the enemy and try to hit him as many times as possible right at the beginning.

However you might look at the grinding part from the story perspective. In fact you are just a small bug in a vast fallen kingdom, that no one really cares about that much. And you are being tested at every step to determine if you are worthy to succeed.

But you can do it. And the award is a beautiful gaming experience that will stay in your heart.

I played hollow knight 2 years ago & dropped it cause it felt really boring for some reason. Years passed & many told me to play it again. I didn’t want to but it felt like an obligation to finish one of the most praised indie games of all time so i said screw it. I told to myself: “i know i may not enjoy the game but i will finish the game whatever it takes!” And that’s exactly that.I was right all along & i didn’t enjoy my experience that much. My first impressions years ago were true & nothing suprised me.I didn’t know then why i didn’t enjoy the game but after finishing it i can say what exactly made me feel this way, Hollow knight felt like a chore. It felt like a huge boring grind in jrpg games. the times that i was playing hollow knight were not more enjoyable than my work hours or when i used to study. Hollow knight lacked a huge thing for me & that was the sole reason most gamers play video game: “fun” Now don’t get me wrong, i love hard games. I adore soulsborne + elden ring series, i enjoy Nioh for it’s masterpiece of combat system.I loved my experience with celeste & i have a huge respect for monster hunter series.I don’t particularly hate metroidvania genre either. Metroid dread, ori & will of the whisps are two of my favorite games of all time. The reason i find hollow knight to be boring is: the pacing. Hollow knight is too big for it’s own good. So in order to fill the gap they added alot of collectables and upgrades. The problem is: those collectables feel pointless because on their own they aren’t that significant. Unlike metroid when you find an upgrade & after finding it you can access new areas to explore more, in hollow knight you find a mask shard. What happens after finding one? NOTHING! You need to find 3 more to get a tiny bit of more HP. You find a pale Ore. Ok what happens after that? You need to backtrack All the way to blacksmith to get a stronger needle but after 2nd upgrade you need to find even more pale ore to do that! So finding a single pale ore will be even more significant later on. You see the problem here? In order to have a bigger game they split objects and power ups and in doing so, devs made collectibles more insignificant. Not only that but real upgrades that change the gameplay significantly, are too far from each other. Metroidvania games are short for a reason. It’s by design that a genre which consists of getting lost & backtracking is shorter than your average RPG game. I’ve read that devs said: “we want to players get lost alot and explore the world”. Okay I’m fine with getting lost but not when i get lost and lose all my Geo! Which stops me from further exploration and forces me to backtrack even more in a genre that has enough backtracking itself. Some may say “well! Souls-borne games also have backtracking & losing souls but why you love them?” The reason is: souls-borne games aren’t platformers so you can run past all the enemies and get your souls back Easy peasy! You can’t do the same in hollow knight because it has platforming challenges in it. You may actually die again and lose all your geo for good. There’e another problem in the design. In souls-borne games when you reach a bonfire or lantern, you can spend your currency right away (i know in bloodborne you must reach hunters dream but my point stands) your currency is safe when you reach a bench or a bonfire. In hollow knight however, not only benches are too far from each other, you can’t spend your geo after getting to a bench Unless there’s a stag station near that bench and some places like crystal peaks, lack any stag stations at all. So what happens is: you get a huge amount of geo if you don’t spend them and you can’t spend them right away .you can put then in bank in fog canyon but you have to go there first :). Imagine having alot of souls in darksouls but not being able to level up for a long time! You have a high chance of losing a huge amount of souls. Another issue is as i mentioned the lack of enough stag stations for how huge the map is. So when you want to do something in an area you visited previously, you may get stuck in there just to reach the stag station. Okay so how bad can losing Geo be? Well it wouldn’t be bad if the game wanted geo for every damn thing! When you enter the area and presumably die twice and lose all you geo, you can’t buy map, you can’t even open stag stations (which are rare to begin with) and heck in fog canyon you can’t even grind and to cornifer’s map there costs 150 geo! . So you need to grind! so not only hollow knight features getting lost more frequently than your average metroidvania & more backtracking, it also features grinding to som extent and in some situations. Sounds fun? NO! It ain’t FUN. Now you may say if you hate grinding, why you love soulsborne & monster hunter games… and the answer is simple: in monster hunter games you grind and get stronger by crafting better armor & getting a better weapon and after that you can fight more interesting monsters. In souls-borne your entire build is dependent on getting souls and some extent of grinding. But after griniding you can wield cooler weapons and change your play style significantly. In hollow knight you grind and buy a map! Or open a teleport station.i know for vast majority of players this is an insignificant issue and it is, but for me it adds to little issues i mentioned above & makes the game less & ruins the pacing. Another example of bad pacing in this game at least in my experience: After you find another 2 Ores you should go all the way back to blacksmith to get the 3rd needle upgrade ok fine but when you get there, the blacksmith tells you that you need 2000 geo for upgrading. If you had enough geo already it’s fine but if you didn’t? Enjoy the grind :) I’m indifferent about the combat in this game. It is fluid yes ( clunky compared to Ori 2 or Metroid dread but whatever) but doesn’t evolve enough. This isn’t an issue in a short metroidvania title but hollow knight ain’t short! You don’t even get new weapons. The needle upgrades are just some digits, nothing more. Yes you get charged attacks, spells and new shards but they don’t change the core feeling of combat. I don’t really care about the art style in this game but i know that is super subjective and the atmosphere is so good so that’s a huge plus for this game Deepnest was so creepy for example. And while i didn’t enjoy the game & it was a frustrating game for me, i can’t ignore the good objective qualities of this game. Amount of enemy variety and bosses in this game is remarkable, the music is great and overall map design is solid for the most part. Hollow knight felt like a chore for me but i will admit it’s a good game and i can understand why people adore it.

I also found it very hard to tell where to go (I know it's a metroidvania and purposefully open-ended in that sense). I loved the way it feels and I thought the art was very well made (although sometimes the art would hide hazards, which absolutely ruined some of my gameplay grouves). I got stuck (SPOILER STARTS) at the spider part, where I go through the little minidungeon. I escaped, then nothing happened anywhere and I backtracked for HOURS trying to figure out where to go, but I just couldn't make progress and eventually reached the point where it just wasn't fun anymore. But honestly I don't love metroidvanias to begin with, so I definitely still recommend it to others!

The boss fights are tough, but with trail and error, you can find solutions to overcome. So many secrets to find and places to explore. I take a star off because sometimes there are elements of "cheapness" to the game where no matter what you do, you will die. And then you might have to go back and grind to get geo again because you die before you are able to defeat your shadow or the shadow is put in a place where it is nearly impossible to beat it without dying (eg: over spikes, thrones or pits). However, the game is so much fun and if you have the patience and perseverance, you will have a great time.

EDIT: I started again. I'm a lil sadistic.

EDIT2: I F.....NG FINISHED IT.

55 HOURS OF AGONY AND PAIN.

BETTER THAN ANY ORGASMS IN MY WHOLE LIFE.

BAHAHAAHAHAHA.

  • My first gameplay, i deleted it after 4 hours. Bored. Didn't like repeating same stuff.

  • Second gameplay, i decided to go after bosses. After second boss, i quit again. Said it was impossible to beat this game.

  • Third gameplay, i decided to explore and learn before going into battles. Gathered almost all mask shards, life shards. Most of the charms, all notches.

Opened new areas. Beat bosses. And game started to feel like more easier, still challenging, but more enjoyable.

And lore is amazing. The more you learn about backstory, the more you like the game.

Overall, it's a great indie game. Perfect. Awesome.

Wow.

I only ask that people limit themselves to one or two games and that they claim keys for themselves or someone close and not to sell to a key re-seller. I would like these to go to someone who will directly benefit form, and will enjoy playing, the game.

I don’t want anything in return but do want people who might not otherwise have a chance to play these games to have the opportunity.

Hollow Knight is among my favorite indie games now, its a challenging game which will throw you into a mysterious world full of tough encounters and at each time it will prepare you for the next to come.

The game itself is challenging enough but for those who like extra hard stuff, there is some optional things to do in Hollow Knight that are extremely brutally hard to beat, most of them are DLC content.

The inspiration from the Souls series is noticeable, however they did not just rely on that, Team Cherry did add their own flavor into this one. The story is minimal and its bits of lore and dialogue a very vague story-line which kind of is similar to how Souls series presents its world.

The Music is extremely good, I loved it! amazing OST. Gameplay as i said is challenging, there is a good sense of progression with each area you get a new ability, it has no puzzles but it has hidden areas which add a very cool exploration sense to the game. For me this was harder than any of the Souls series cause of its optional encounters which i did because i like to complete things. (Trial of Fools is super hard)

Sometimes the game feels frustrating when for example you need to jump over spikes or in White palace which made me rage many times, i dont know if i will consider this a negative or not, from one side its not a control issue but from the other side its a system which did annoy me a lot getting hit by a spike and you get to return to the start of the path is an annoying thing, another thing that annoyed me is that if i even touch an enemy i lose a mask. Another thing that annoyed me is how even the first enemies still deal the same damage to me as late game enemies, so its a game which punishes your mistakes and there is no feeling of diving into more dangerous lands. Also another annoying thing is how some bosses force you to adapt to certain set of charms in order to make the battle more fair and smooth.

All those are kinda not definite flaws, but they are a hassle for me, and i didnt enjoy them, even if from a game design perspective they can be considered fine. Despite those annoying things i managed to enjoy the hell out of this game, i enjoyed it a a lot, (i played over 60 hours), and i will only take -0.5 from my final score because of them, not much.

I would like a bit more clear story/lore than what they offered.

Overall Hollow Knight is an excellent game, its the Dark Souls of indie games.

“If all the ways I have been along were marked on a map and joined up with a line, it might represent a minotaur.” -Pablo Picasso

A bit about myself… I’m a metroidvaniac, as Well-Red calls it, going way back into the 80’s. I beat the original Metroid before I beat 3rd grade. My heart has also been burnt a deep searing charcoal black from playing and beating the entirety of the Soulsborne games. If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you will absolutely love Hollow Knight. If you’re nothing like me, you will still love it 😉 …because this game is insanely good.

It’s my pleasure to be here again at the Well-Red blog to bring you another review, this time on the absolutely gorgeous, hand-drawn, labyrinthine world called Hollow Knight. It’s been classified as a metroidvania, but really, it’s so much more than just an arbitrary category. It’s an experience chock-full of dark and mysterious lore, a painted world of subterranean exploration that will challenge any grizzled gaming veteran’s platforming skills. It picks up the torch of the games of yore and douses it with the fresh gasoline of new game mechanics, unique art, colorful characters and evocative storytelling. The incredible polish and love put into this game is apparent from the start screen and doesn’t let up. It won’t even let you leave either, as there are plenty of challenges and a lot of replayability left after your first run through. Ovid told that Daedalus, the mythological craftsman of the Labyrinth, could barely escape his own contraption due to it’s confounding design, …and I too am yet to escape this one myself. I must be a voluntary minotaur as I’m gearing up for a second bout, so I can get the special ending that I didn’t get my first time around.

How did I come to play this game? I’ve recently had an odd, first-world type of crisis of not knowing which game to buy. As I get higher in levels (currently level 36), I find that my tastes have gotten more specific and it has gotten harder and harder to find games that I can justify to myself to spend the time and money on. I have a small list of games on my Steam wishlist, but I just couldn’t choose which one to buy. Hollow Knight has been there for a while since I heard about it on the subreddit r/metroidvania. Anyhow, after getting a friendly pep-talk from our host Well-Red, I bit the bullet and grabbed Hollow Knight. (Note to young mages out there: leveling-up comes with greater spells, but also greater challenges)

After giving the game an honest play-through, I’m more than happy to say that it blew me away. What a fantastic gaming experience! I am now doing this review in hopes that you too, dear reader, will treat yourself (or someone else) to the opportunity of playing this game. Grabbing it will not only be fun for you, but by doing so you will also be supporting the devs (Team Cherry) on their colossal development effort. Seriously, at $14.99, the game is a steal and I can’t wait for whatever it is they decide to do next. That isn’t to say that the game doesn’t have any flaws, but they are almost endearing in their triviality compared to the overall joy of the whole experience.

Before I break down into the 8-bit review, I will to give you a little background on the game’s development and the dev team. Here we go! Hollow Knight released in February 2017 and has been given a ton of praise, and deservedly so, but who are the people behind this phenomenon?

The high points in Hollow Knight are the boss encounters, there are many and most are very engaging, relying on a good mix between pattern recognition and reflex to clear. You can recover health, but that requires standing still for a second, which adds another "mode" to a boss fight where you're trying to recover health instead of attack.

Hollow Knight stumbles a bit when it comes to guidance, the world is large and there's a lot of places to go, except only a few will lead to progress. In addition, your auto-map doesn't update until you hit a save point, which is very inconvenient and at times frustrating, since you either have to stumble into a new save point or backtrack to one you know in order to just see the map (e.g. to see any paths you missed).

I finished Hollow Knight with 23 hours on my save file.
