I would give this zero stars if I could. It feels like some fanboy held the devs at gunpoint and demanded they make Halflife 3, now! This was the result.
It was a tech demo to be fair.
I have nothing to say, it’s literally about nothing, just an ordinary tech demo with a rotten grandfather. Since this is a tech demo, I won’t even evaluate it. I'll rate it better than my grandfather.
10 out of 10 grandfathers, I would get drunk with him.
All the commentary is about HDR and refraction and I truly didn't give a shit.
It's like 8 commentaries about HDR and then one of them is "we put a puzzle here because you just did a big shooting thing and we thought this would be fun game design" ok. Really genius stuff. Never would have cracked this one myself. Don't think there is any reason I would ever recommend someone play this unless like me they just needed to see all of Half-Life 2.

FPS - A level that was cut from the game and was used to showcase Half-Life 2's graphics and physics engine.
PROS:
++ Developer commentary. Enjoyed the commentary on the Half-Life 2 development and process.
CONS:
-- Not a game. Just a tech demo so it didn't really offer anything new.
Check out my playthrough on twitch to see my thoughts on it!
Purchased this as part of the Half-Life franchise bundle like a decade ago. Finally booted it up thanks to Steam's "Spring Cleaning" event.
While this is not, strictly speaking, a great video game, it is still very fun - you have a variety of weapons, the level is well balanced and fun to navigate, and I highly recommend playing with developer commentary on - I found myself performing certain actions exactly as the devs were describing, such as when I defeated a wave of soldiers and then took a minute to explore my surroundings, while the devs described exactly how that room was designed to suit that exact purpose.
All that aside, the true purpose of Lost Coast is to showcase certain aspects of game design - primarily things like rendering light and water, as well as how those effects can be used to affect how a player perceives a level. This is definitely worth grabbing if you're interested in such things.
Half Life is an amazing series but Lost Coast didn't cut it for me. Alright, it's fun to play and I enjoy the gameplay. But there isn't really much to it and for me the game is over in minutes (my best time was 10 minutes) and really all there is to. So, the game deserves a 5 stars for its fun game play but is knocked down to 3 stars by the downsides.
Getting close to 400 played games and I just keep thinking about this one, a 15min HL2 extra level that is classified as a different product. Any other game would've this under the "Extras" tab but not Valve. Same thing with the multiplayer component. Never understood why they do stuff like this. Mr. Newell, as always, works in mysterious ways.
Beat on Hard. For some reason I never played this back in 2008 when I played the rest of the game and only played it now in 2020. I was excited at first thinking it was another episode, but no it is just a short level. I found the level to be a significant challenge due to much of the combat taking place on that cliff face with enemies coming from forward, back, above AND below. Probably some of the most challenging (or cheap) combat of the entire game. While it has the same mastercrafting of the rest of the game, it is just a short level and does not showcase everything Half Life 2 has to offer.
