Windjammers might not be a real sport, but this incredibly fast paced and easy to learn, difficult to master playstyle makes me wish it was.
The 1993 World Championship for Windjammers is upon us! Select from six different representatives of six countries to battle in various Windjammer stages. The game is very similar to pong, except by using a Frisbee disc instead. You can throw the disc or lob it in the air to catch opponents off guard, and block and slide towards the disc to catch it (with the opportunity for a Super Sonic throw if you time it right!). You can also charge under a disc as it flies through the air toward you for a special attack, which can be done using the lob or throw buttons - the defending player can time their strikes and send it right back at you, so be careful! The player can also use a half circle move to curve the disc as well, leading to more challenging strategies and opportunities.
Each character has their own amounts of power and speed along with different supers, making each character worth checking out at least once. The game goes for 30 second increments for 2/3 sets per round, making it quick and breezy before the player gets too fatigued. Matches can get quick and difficult very quickly, especially on high CPU levels, but it's a blast to play with friends! Scoring varies based on the six different stages as they have different scoring goals for 3-5 points, as well as the ability to make the other player miss the disc. In between a few rounds with the CPU are some other fun minigames, including throwing a disc for your cute dog at the beach and doing some speed bowling.
The visuals and music are a excellently colorful and cheerful mix of summertime fun, with hammerin' beats and explosive supers that would feel right at home in a fighting game. Each character is brimming with personality and the stages are designed to look very different from each other for a blast no matter where you choose.
Windjammers is an incredibly unique game (if you don't mind the tips it takes from Pong) and has a blood-pumping and breath-taking presentation. It's one of the ultimate competitive arcade games and the made-up sports game that needs to exist.
