Devil Daggers is a brutally-difficult single player first person shooter, set on a small arena where hordes of demonic enemies spawn. The objective of the game is to survive for as long as possible. This game is really stripped down to the bare essentials of an fps game. There's one button (shoot) and WASD moves around, with space to jump. The arena is square in shape. You shoot at the scary skeleton things, and when you die you're given a score, which is how long you survived down to the microsecond. Everything is simplified. There's no story, no different modes, no maps or obstacles or various weapons or upgrades or crafting or anything. You don't even have gun and even the menu consists of just a couple buttons. Basically It's just you and the demonic hordes.
There's also no health bar.. in some ways it's like a first-person bullet hell game. You're running around this small arena, there are hundreds of enemies coming at you.. and if one of them even brushes against you, that's it you're dead. So it requires perfect coordination,

In many ways, Devil Daggers is similar to games like Dark Souls or Super Meat Boy. Or maybe it's a mixture of the new Doom plus Super Crate Box. It's quick to pick up but very difficult to master. Dying (over and over again) is not a "game over" but instead it's an essential part of the experience; a game mechanic. In fact the "R" key is bound to restart so you can rapidly try over and over again.
Despite the simplicity of this game, it seems as though the style and design have been carefully constructed. In appearance it immediately evokes memories of software rendering, like Quake from the 90's, those jagged pixelated edges and textures. The sound is another key feature of the game. While you play, a creepy ambient tune hums underneath it all and as you progress the music and sounds start to build and intensify. Sound is actually a very important aspect of the game and headphones are recommended as you often rely on the sounds to tell whether there are enemies behind or beside you. The whole experience is really intense but also addictive. In the same manner as Dark Souls, you initially find yourself faced against such overwhelming odds. But through repetition you slowly begin to master the systems and to make progress. But you can't win this game, you will inevitably become overwhelmed by the enemies, it's only a matter of time.
Usually I don't play first person shooters, so it's hard for me to understand why I am so fond of this game. Perhaps it's because I like ridiculous challenges. The atmosphere of this game is overwhelming and palpable, and it feels quite amazing when you reach a new milestone or kill a difficult enemy. I don't really spend much time playing FPS games so I'm out of practice, but I'm quite proud of my current high score, which is 171.6187 seconds. A big part of the fun and the experience is beating your own time and the times of your friends. The game automatically tracks the scores of your Steam friends and also tracks your own progress on the global leaderboard. From within the game you can click on anyone on the leaderboard (or your own personal best) and look at detailed stats or watch a complete replay of the match.
This game is insane and it's really good. If anyone wants to try it, it's available at the moment for $1 from the Humble Store. Come, I challenge anyone to hop on Steam and beat my high score. :P
a great game with addictive replayablity. One of the few games that i enjoyed the challenge of and improving in.
What's the point of this game? It looks nice, but no progression and zero motivation.
I'm sure that Devil Daggers does what it sets to do admirably. It's just that I'm not attracted to what it sets out to do: Running around in a blocky-graphics death arena, trying to survive always a fw seconds more isn't my cup of tea.
Very fun game to kill time, repetitive but that's what this game was built to be. Played for a solid 3 months, probably won't open ever again. Gotta be extremely bored.
Some day I must impart the tragic tale of experience with this game. Of how I eventually triumphed after years of suffering and frustration. The hardest victory I've ever earned in gaming, by miles. I would urge anyone to stay away from Devil Daggers, lest ye too become consumed by the quest for 500 seconds. 🤕
Finally managed to beat my previous record, putting myself in the top 5%. I actually don't even know what I did to achieve it. I somehow got some powerup which made things go in slow motion for about 10 seconds. I guess I'll have to look at a guide or something to figure that one out. It's kinda funny because I wasn't really feeling my best, but things just worked out well. However as soon as I got the record the adrenaline caught up with me.
Things really get difficult around the 180 second mark. That's where the 3 spiders and another centipede appear all at once. Up to this point, it is possible to clear out each wave before the next arrives. At this point it's no longer possible to do that. Instead you must quickly try to kill the spiders while dodging everything else coming your way. I got a lucky break with the powerup, which allows you to kill the spiders with just a few shotgun blasts. After that I basically ran around for 20 seconds just dodging the skulls and shooting any golden rams, plus killing the spinning things whenever I had a moment to spare. …

I feel like this PB might be hard for me to beat, but I sure would like to get the gold ranking for surviving 250 seconds.
Killing the centipede is more difficult than killing the spiders, but with practice you can find a decent lineup to rake all the red diamonds from it. You actually get 2 chances at it before another wave appears, so it's not too hard with practice. My new strategy is to immediately take down the centipede and then use the remaining time to take the spider. Then there's a few more waves of golden rams and skulls and then when the 3 spiders appear that's when things get out of hand. The green things that the spiders shoot are the hardest for me to handle, I always seem to find a way to run into them, so that's why I try to kill the spiders as soon as they appear.
Anyways here's my PB. I'm reasonably happy with it, so I'm not sure if I'll be going any further with this game. I'll post my thoughts on the game a bit later.

Okay I managed 202 seconds. The main thing that caused me difficulty was killing the 2 spider things. I wasn't able to kill them in time and then the time wasted on them meant that I was suddenly surrounded by skulls and whatnot. I think the key to advance is to kill the 2 spiders as quickly as possible. I'm not sure about the centipede thing, he just floats around doing nothing. After this point I think the game will probably turn into crowd control, trying to keep the group of enemies together so you can avoid them easier.
Anyways it felt good to move up so far, to 12,473/168,203. Top 8%. 😤😤😤 Of course now I must make top 5%.

I am starting to think that this will not be easy. However I am getting better. At first I struggled a bit in the first 60 seconds, but once you get better with the controls and whatnot, the first 60 seconds are pretty much free. After that you learn how to quickly kill the spider thing, and you can get to 120. After that you learn to go for the golden ram thingies first, and shoot the spinny things in a certain order. You learn to build up a map of where everything is in your mind. So now I can get to 190 seconds. Apparently that makes me a decent player, for I am 18,195/168,133, almost top 10%. First I'm just trying to crack 60 seconds, then I wanna make top 50,000, then I wanna make top 20,000... There's always someone better than you. Anyway whatever, I'm gonna try to make 200 seconds.

My current PB for Devil Daggers: 171.6187
It's harder than it looks. If one of those hundreds of enemies or spawners or anything touches you slightly then it's game over. Very proud of this run! I haven't been able to kill that centipede thing though, it's impossible.
