Pretty, Forgiving, Fun - Still A Great Game Despite Its Ripoff-Isms

Preliminary: Haha I was just about to write how it seems I have not learned my lesson from the countless honiorary 3 stars that should've been 2 stars in 92, with fun enough platforming and 1992-SNES-expected Looks, and yet here I was playing through 2 levels alreayd of this. The Look feels futuristic adn advanced, but it's decidedly akin to its contemporaries. The Sound is cute and fun, but nothing spectacular. And the gameplay was yet another fun-enough platformer. And I was going to write how luckily the movement is fast enough, the controls tight, and the level design better than Tiny Toons Buster Busts Loose etc but just wish it had a dash feature. And then I decided to try the shoulder button ;) Sure enough, a dash feature! Maybe this actually will earn a 3 star?! Or gasp a 4 star? I didn't seem to love the first one of this series. Hopefully this one warrants a full palythrough.

I like that you can land on enemies without it arbitrarily counting as damage, indeed you can use them as platforms in a way. I like that you can aim your attacks up, that you can do a higher jump by holding up before it, and that I discovered all this intuitively. The level designs and enemy designs are good so far, tho they're a bit less linear than how I like my "simply go right" platformers :-p

Day 1

The Mario ripoff-ness of the music is quite profoudn lol. Tho this definnitely pulls all the shots for unique ideas for the mechanics, you can do everything from dive while jumping to pushing enemies along to the aforementioned nice mechanics.

Nice the swimming level music is a jam and unique, not too Mario-y. And the controls continue to shine. There are 35 levels in total it seems, so I have quite the journey ahead but this seems it's properly worth it not just another honorary 3 star! Nice!

Ok so I see how some called it a legit hodgepodge lol so now it's suddenlty Megaman esque where I can pick whiuch series of stages I do next? Despite this hodgepodge nature I'm loving the gameplay/mechanics themselves and the tunes keep growing on me. I loved dashing through levels that you can, I loved pushing enemies in front of me like a rolling projectile that can take out other enemies, and I loved continuing to accidentally find more and more gimmicky features that nonetheless add up to a nice Feel, esp with the nice tunes and almost-Tomba-esque Look. And that there's no time limit/time factor in levels.

I had that Mario and other fast-paced-platformer vibe where I just kept finding myself at the next level next level next boss next level and couldn't put it down.

Not a big fan of this ship stage having the camera move back and forth as part of the challenge so you don't know which way you're expected to go. Tiny Toons Buster Busts Loose did that too (well, camera movement as main enemy/level mechanic), but at least Congo's Caper doesn't havee you die if you go to the edge of the screen

Welp seems like 2 of these 4 selectable worlds is a good place to stop. And there was an intro world? Not sure how many worlds in total :-p But they're flying along quite quickly and are mostly keeping to a 4 star rating.

Day 2

Welp those 2 worlds were done quite quickly. Unsure of whether it contineus, suddenly the Pterodactyl drops me off into the T Rex's mouth? Lol ok.

I can see how this feels a bit innocuous and gasp dare I say it, too easy, as I fight this multi-phase final boss. But I dunno. Heaven forbid a game be fun adn generous witb its life replenishment/re-upgrades.

Well I had to speak to soon. This final phase is really tough. I had to finally start using savestates cuz I didn't wanna start back on first phase over and over. And wait what, the ending was non-existent lol. Ok phew at least there was an ending screen after the abrupt credits enter image description here

Look: 8.5/10 Eventually I just have to accept that this is the standard look now but I like it all it's so cozy and vibrant and Tomba-esque.

Sound: 8.5/10

Play: 8/10 Impressive in someways, but quite empty in others.

Feel: 8.5/10

Attachment: 8/10

Overall: 8.3/10

Completion: Main Game
