Having just completed the game, I can only say; they made some choices... I basically knew the big surprise at the end, but that didn't mean it really had any less impact. I'm not really sure what they are going for here, but I could have used about 15 hours less wandering around doing garbage and ALOT more story. I'm also wondering if this means part 2 is going to be out before the end of PS5 generation... Cause I'm not entirely sure I'm going to remember all this if it isn't.

I’m eight chapters in, so I think about halfway through, and WOW what an incredible game so far. I’ve heard about how this game does things no remake of anything really does, so I’m excited to see how else it can improve upon or make changes to its source material. I know remakes like FFVII, RE2, 3 and Demon's Souls are great game, but I'm constantly worried that they are gonna make the originals 'dissapear' from pop culture and discussions.

It's already difficult to get some old games to work because the originals platforms are not available and there's no relaunch (FFVII '97, gladly, doesn't have this problem). But there's no easy way to play the original RE2 and 3 right now. When people mention those names now they're not refering to the classics.
And then there's Demon's Souls. Yes, the new version is faitful to the original and prettier, but It's not the same game. It has changes in visual style and enemy designs. The original game cannot work online anymore and that experience is completely lost.
I wrote a full article in spanish about this. Maybe I'm overthinking, but I'm always worried about video game preservation.

I liked this game a lot until the ending chapters. I felt that it got too far away from the source material and was even alienating to newcomers. I like how it expands certain parts of the story, but at the same time, it really only covers the first 10 hours of the original game. Just play the original.

Hoo boy, I’ve come to the end and I know three things for certain: 1) that ending was better than I could have imagined, 2) I have goosebumps thinking about the next instalment and 3) I love that this game has been serialized, it allowed for an expansion on the base story in Midgar and ended at a perfect spot. …

It’s fantastic that they are telling an expanded story, but we can enjoy that longer story in reasonable chunks.

I think I’m around the halfway point, about to go
Nothing has quite beaten Chapter 4 which I thought was the peak so far, but it’s been consistently good to great for this first dozen hours. My favorite character, Jessie, has unfortunately been offscreen for several hours straight, but the game is doing a fine job giving me reasons to care about just about everyone. Cloud and Tifa especially have been great.
The combat has been getting more and more fun, really loving this system and its challenge level. FFVI is the peak for me, and I wouldn’t be so quick to say this dethrones it, but almost everything I loved in the FF games I’ve played is across the board even better in this one. Like I loved XV, but this is making me reevaluate its quality in comparison. If all this great stuff is just the first few hours of the original, then they’ve truly taken the idea of a “remake” to the next level.

I think I'm done with this. I got to the part where
I have no desire to play this game further. I don't like the way the characters are expressed, I don't like how plodding some of the sequences are, and worst of all I don't like the combat. At all. I was getting used to it, but you know what? "Getting used to it" isn't good enough for me. For me the combat ranged from frustrating to "OK I guess." There's a million trillion billion games in my Steam library, there's a few PS4 games on my shelf I haven't touched yet, and a handful of Black Isle titles I could be playing from GOG. I'm not going to spend time with a characters I find fundamentally irritating and combat that I find "OK I guess."
No longer do I play games for some strange sense of "conquest" or "achievement." Those days are behind me. I play games to have fun and I was not having fun with my time in Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Nearly 100% through the game. I'm just missing 2 of Tifa's bridal outfits, finishing the challenge where I fight Pride and Joy, and learning 2 enemy skills I missed. So far, I'm at 100 hours, 47 minutes, 56 seconds for my work. It's been long and hard, but still enjoyable. Can't wait to get platinum and move on to a …

Tim Rogers, perhaps my favorite video game commentator and perhaps my favorite Youtube personality, is back!
If you don't get the appeal, you probably just won't. But if you've never checked him out, give his new video a watch.
