40 hours in, I'm finally starting to enjoy this game.
Part of it is that I just say fuck off to the minigames and started micromanaging more the team equipment and composition. Not ideal, but at least now the combat is a little more fun.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Won't Have As Many Minigames As Rebirth
In a new interview with Daily Star, Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi tackles a range of topics, from why there aren’t any plans for DLC to the way Final Fantasy as a whole has evolved. Of course, one of the big topics that came up was the prevalence of minigames in Rebirth.
"A certain number of people said there were too many minigames in Rebirth, and ultimately I can see their point of view — but I do think we made the right decision in terms of the breadth and the volume of content for the minigames in Rebirth,” Hamaguchi says, “But certainly looking forward to the third game and to other games, if you asked me "would I do the same number of minigames?" I don't think I would.”

The game has many fantastic elements and moments. It is breath taking what they have done with this remake series as a whole.
That said I got so burned out while playing this. It took me over three months to beat it. It is my most played PS game with 80+ hours and I didn’t even come close to 100% …

Some folks will absolutely have this as their game of the year and I can see why. But for me the journey was far too long.

As a massive OG FF7 fan, I loved this game, how it told the story, and how it ended. Perfect way to respect the legacy of the original, while leaving room for new stuff - just the right balance between resolution and epic finale moments, and lingering unease and tension that is just right for an "entry 2 out of 3" ending in a trilogy, that leaves you immediately absolutely THIRSTING for the 3rd game even after 100+ hours of playing this one, with zero burnout in sight. This game was damn near perfect overall, and imo it's going to go down in history as one of the best RPGs (certainly, JRPGs) of all time.

How Sephiroth was portrayed in the flashback was great, and it successfully added intrigue and mystery behind his character leading up to his decline. Anyway, it's taken until the Corel region for the story to start feeling like it's picking up again. I'm feelin' optimistic ~

Did I play a different version of FFVII Rebirth than this person?

A Boss Around Every Corner
In Rebirth, bosses are commonplace. You fight them almost as often as regular enemies. I tend to play the game in one-hour stretches before I start my work for the day, and like clockwork, those sessions tend to end shortly after my party has worked together to fell a massive monster.
I genuinely don’t remember my playthrough being that heavily peppered with boss fights.

As yet another spectacle of inexplicably choreographed horror unfolded in front me upon entering the Golden Saucer, and as I felt my soul dying a little more as I was thrust into yet another bizarre mini-game, I took a hard look at myself and how I was spending my time and uninstalled the game for good.

There were quite a few issues I felt that were present throughout the game, but honestly the overall experience still makes it a 9/10 game for me. It sucked me in right off the bat and gave me feelings of excitement and wonder with each region. Don't get me wrong, the added story bits are all over the place and the pacing at points is wild too, not to mention the unbalanced minigames and copy and pasted world quests, but again, even so this was a wonderfully fun experience that was absolutely worth the price of admission. This might be a contender for my GOTY already.

Oh. Um. So...little PSA. The final boss just straight up ignores Phoenix's ressurect ability if you get hit by the one shot move. Neato. Can they stop peppering so many bosses with cheap one shot kill moves?

So after seeing that there's a quest that requires playing the chocobo races at the gold saucer all the way up to the gold cup (roughly 10 wins I think) before you can even compete in the race required for the quest, I think I've decided I'm no longer interested in finishing all the side quests. That's just too much investment for a side character's story that I'm not really interested in.
