Depths of Sanity is both the best horror metroidvania I’ve played, as well as the best underwater metroidvania I’ve played. It is very well paced from beginning to end, and has a very unique charm to it.
The game somehow balances the biggest conflict between a horror and metroidvania game - becoming more powerful, while also becoming more vulnerable. Every upgrade the game gives you is a very satisfying tool to combat the environment, and yet the environment keeps getting darker and more dangerous. This dichotomy grows in intensity as the game moves forward.
The art is very retro but has a unique charm to it. The gameplay feels very different from other underwater games. The movement is tricky to get used to, but eventually you do. It reminds me of the tank controls in early resident evil, because the wonky movement actually adds to the horror and helplessness.
The level design is really well done, as every room feels different and serves a unique purpose. The music is pretty perfect as well. I do wish the map would give a little more hints on hidden secrets, as it is really difficult to 100% the game with its current information. …

It’s one of the best MVs I’ve played this year (next to Islets and HAAK) and I highly recommend it!
